So, anyways, I was driving along...

Post by Plutoman »

And I got a new record for my top speed. 119mph, baby, in a freaking 12 year old Honda Accord! Heck-yes. I was surprised it didn't blow apart past 110. Not to mention the fact that the engine actually still RAN after I did that p_o No matter the fact that it's a honda, it has 245 thousand miles on it, 12 years old, and the exhaust pipe is broken p_o

Anyways, 'twas fun. Posted here for once, since I banned myself (requested ban) on my typical forums, no sense in even being tempted to hang out there with AP exams coming up >_>

My foot fell asleep on the gas pedal, and I couldn't move it. And I don't enjoy using my clutch foot on the brakes.

That honestly made me bust out laughing. Somehow combined dead pan wit with "dont give a f*ck" in one, compact smiley.

I got 101 on a four-lane highway in California in the middle of regular traffic (not rush hour), in an Equinox. I probably would have gone faster but my exit came up too fast. I was not late to work that day.

I've gone faster than that in my 1987 Grand Marquis, but I don't know how much faster, because my speedometer cuts out at 85.

I've also gone 52 in a 25 zone, but I got a ticket for that. :/ I was late to work that day.

I thought you guys had a national speed limit of 55 mph or something? Or is that just in Hitchcock films?

65 for most freeways. It got upped from 55 about ten-fifteen years back. Some places out in the desert it's 75.

when i was 17, and still convinced that i'd be the next big deal independent film maker, i got my first speeding ticket as a result of a picture i was making.

it was a stupid plot. something about how a best friend was off to finally score, and lose his virginity, but he had forgotten a rubber, so his best friend was trying to chase him down, to get the condom to him, but the other guy thought the best friend was trying to cock block him, or whatever.

anyway, that was the premise for the car chase. mind you, this was 1996. so i happened to have 3 vhs camcorders, and set them up appropriately. one in each car, and one manned by another "crew member" on the side of the road. we had planned to shoot the chase a few times, and then edit it together.

but the only way to do it, was to film (tape) it in the middle of the night, when there was no traffic. however, being a small town, the cops were bored, and looking for excuses. well, i played the friend chasing the guy going off to score (in addition to directing the opus). we both knew the roads incredibly well.

but since i was in the rear, i was the one who got nabbed. i was clocked going 75 in a 25. and i swear to you, we were as safe as moron 17 year old boys could be doing that kind of speed. we knew the roads well.

i should have been sunk, but i got lucky. the cop wrote the ticket as being 14 miles over the limit, cause he recognized me from cub scouts (one small benefit to growing up in a small town), and knew i was about to ship off to an Ivy League school, and didn't want to ruin my future. of course, i was about to shit my pants.

we never finished that movie. and i've only exceeded the speed limit egregiously a few other times in my life.
have you ever seen an idealist with grey hairs on his head?
or successful men who keep in touch with unsuccessful friends?
you only think you did
i could have sworn i saw it too
but as it turns out it was just a clever ad for cigarettes.

I topped 130 in my Camry back in my speeding days. I cheated, however. It was a slight downgrade.

Correction, on most major interstates, the speed limit is 75 -parts of 101, I-5, 1-10, 1-80, 1-90, ... etc.

and in Montana, perhaps a few other places there is no real speed limit except safety ... and they also have a much lower population than anywhere else.

Really?! When did it go up and why are all the 65 signs still there?

Now granted, I'm mostly going by the freeways I've driven over in California, but I haven't found one over 65 in the LA area or along any of the major interstates out to where I live, or on any of the major interstates in urban areas in any state that I've been in. In the desert to Palm Springs and up to Vegas, I've seen it 70-75, and along the 5 in the less populated farm-type areas (at least the bits that aren't windy).

Also, which parts of the 101 have a speed limit of 75? I gotta ask, because I've never seen it going more than 30 miles an hour. Is it up the coast a bit?

Most of the interstates around me are at 70, I'm in Kansas City, bordering Missouri.

You know what else? Some lady flipped me off because I revved my engine and accelerated fast p_o 11:30 at night, coming home from a theater, my exhaust is broken, my engine is loud, I rev and accelerate, and she flips me off as I pass her <_<

Funny as hell. I typically only break the speed limit when I'm concentrating on driving, and when no one else is around. If I have the radio going, cell phone on, etc., I'll stay at it, just to be safe. I'm heading off to an Ivy League for a masters degree after I get a bachelors, no sense ruining my future.

Take this kind of stuff to a track guys. I understand the itch to go fast, but there are places do that. Find your local SCCA/NASA or sports car club, and sign up for a HPDE event, or Auto-X, and learn to handle your car, and have the fun of getting to run wide open for a while. Doing this kind of stuff on public roads, is just stupid.

And for refrence, one of my cars, hits just a hair over 110 at the end of 1/4 mile, and kisses 160 on the backstrech at PIR.

140 mph in my 1970 Pontiac GTO prior to the engine overhaul. 125+mph in 2004 GTO, 110 mph in a number of rental cars (damn governors). Lost my license before my 18th b-day, fortunately I was off to college at 17, so I wasn't driving on campus anyway.

170 mph in a NASCAR at the Kentucky Speedway as part of the NASCAR experience, but was a passenger.
