as for the price you're paying, that's equivalent to 240 American dollars, i think. so about 20 bucks a month, right? that's cheaper than cable is here, but that's just a tax to keep the BBC in operation, n'est pas? if that's case, you're right about it being unjust.
however, PBS and NPR are both publicly supported here in the USA, which means our tax dollars go to underwriting their programming.

I hereby decree that Fox News is the only channel that you dirty brits may watch!!!

but of course, that's only with the programs that manage to get attention 3,000 miles from where they were produced -- almost certainly distilling out the shitty programs.
also, the public support for NPR and PBS is almost certainly costing each American household less than the 240 bucks it's costing for your support of the BBC. and of course, NPR and PBS subsist quite a bit off of donations, which are, naturally, tax deductible.

Though, I would say that in general BBC offers much higher quality programming than NPR and PBS.

Autotoad wrote:I'll be totally honest, I watch about 3 hours of TV per week. Before I left my parents house at age 18, I watched a great deal more TV, and plunged into a different situation where I didn't have nor want a TV. Since then, I had grown "less reliant" upon it for my entertainment. Now, being a libertine and mastermind, I can see through the agenda-pushing and subliminal messages that even the higher bracket of intellectual indivduals would miss, and I find that on the BBC, with every TV programme advertised, every drama scene, every environmental documentary shown, there is a sickening level of politicised garbage being pushed upon the vulnerable of mind.
Global warming!
Terrorism!
Racism!
Teh Capitalists!
Carbon footprint!
Middle east!
Iraq!
China!
George Bush!
Same phucking shit every time.
See, what you must realise, is that the BBC has no competition to deal with, they can spew whatever they like, safe in the comfort that they will get their licence fee's every year, thus not providing the people with what they actually want to see, but rather what the BBC wants to show them. If thwey were a commercial broadcaster, I can gaurentee to you now that a great deal less people would be interested in watching their poor programming, and that they would eventually have to take into account the wants of the public, so as to raise their commercial value.
What grates at me, is that the public are forced to pay for their own impending government message....and that just aint cricket.
