The question is, of course, where did this all start?

There are quite a few theories, but there is one, somewhat obscure now, that is considered the real origin. You must remember, that even Shakespeare and previously to him, Chaucer mention April fools day at some point in their writings. In fact, it is my belief that Chaucer himself carried out an April fool within an April fool. He wrote in 'The Nun's Priests tale':

(BTW, for those of you unaware of Chaucer as such, he wrote 'A Knights Tale' upon which book, the film was based)

When that the monthe in which the world bigan
That highte March, whan God first maked man,
Was complet, and passed were also
Syn March bigan thritty dayes and two

This passage appears to be self-contradictory. Does it mean the events occur thirty-two days ("thritty dayes and two") after March “was complet” (i.e. May 3), or thirty-two days “Syn March bigan” (since March began), i.e. April 1? If the latter is correct, the tale takes place on April Fool’s Day, which seems appropriate for a story of a foolish cock and sly fox. Could Chaucer have chosen this date purposefully, setting the tale on April 1st because of the tradition of tricks and foolery associated with the day? I believe so. This then predates just about any other written mention of April fools day by some margin.

However, there is, perhaps, an even older precedent. In Roman Mythology, Pluto the God of the Dead, abducted Proserpina and brought her to live with him in the underworld. Proserpina called out to her mother Ceres, but Ceres, who could only hear the echo of her daughter’s voice, searched in vain for Proserpina. It is thought that this search of Ceres for her daughter (commemmorated during the Roman festival of Cerealia) was the mythological antecedent of the fool’s errands popular on April 1st.

Looking even further back there is, in fact, an even darker precedent.

In the early days of the Greek Empire, it was said that across the seas to the North (now the Channel) there was a land, if one travelled this land and the next across, following the setting sun, (One can assume this would be the UK/Ireland) one came to a vast sea (what we would know as the Atlantic one assumes), that went almost to the end of the earth, at the edge was a land full of Red skinned men who lived in circular tents and rode oxen. It was said these man painted themselves in war, released blood curdling cries as they rode their horses into battle, were unafraid of any enemy and were strong beyond imagination. It was also said they sacrificed some Greeks who had got there by accident. They said the Greeks were captured by a woman with serpents in her hair (It is assumed this gave rise to the tale of Medusa...oddly this name does, roughly, translate into/from Abenaki as 'woman of living hair' ). In 432 BC, the Athenian astronomer Meton instituted his 19-year cycle, fixing regular intercalations, why 19 years we do not now know, however....oddly...within this 'calender' was 19 fixed days, around what we now call April 1. On each this 'Medusa' was celebrated. To placate her and honour those who had died, people would stop strangers in the street and relieve them of money, ostensibly to give to a worthy cause. Unfortunately, the people being what they were then, most of this money stayed in the receivers pockets, so the tradition died within a few decades...

Who was this 'Medusa'? One can only wonder...and I believe, this has to be the earliest recorded history of the Americas being found by Europeans...and of this (date) being celebrated.

Well, it will be the 1 year anniversary of my great-grandfather's death, so it won't exactly be quite like normal.
