Rank icons

Postby Bucknut33 on Sat Mar 01, 2008 11:29 am

1. The "cadet" icon is actually a Lieutenant, which outranks all of the enlisted ranks (Privates, Corporals, and Sergeants).

2. The "Lieutenant" icon is actually a Major. (actually, the non-member gold color is a Major, the premium silver one is a Lieutenant Colonel).

3. The "Captain" icon: ??? Is that a Star Trek or Star Wars captain?

4. The Major one: ??? What the heck is that?

5. The Colonel icon: ??? The "brigadier" icon is actually a Colonel....a brigadier is a one-star General.

No biggie, but I've been in the military for 15+ years and it's kind of irritating seeing incorrect rankings.

They aren't US military rankings though.....is that what you are basing your observations off of?

Actually, I thought someone told me a while back when they were re-done that they were based loosely off of the Canadian military. However, that could be completely false.

Well, it looks like our Colonel and Major ranks came from the Canadian at least. I don't know about the others though.

its a bit of a mix to be sure.....I'm a 21 yr vet of the Cdn Navy....and retired at the rank of Petty Officer 1st Class...a Warrant Officer equivalent...and my rank badge was a crown.......the same crown that was used for Colonel on CC...lol
No matter....we know what the ranks mean in CC.......and these ones are an improvement on what we had originally in CC.....so ......cool....

CHANGE Rank Designators

Postby RoyInAtlanta on Thu May 01, 2008 9:12 pm

Gentlemen,
I am a former officer of US Marines, and have been playing Risk, or other board games for over 30 years.

Although I do enjoy playing ConquerClub games, I am continually confused as to how you came up with the rank designators that you are using.

For example, you use oak leafs for Lieutenant, and a diamond for Captain. Many foreign military forces use diamonds, but they use one for each officer grade for the first few grades. E.g. one diamond for Lieutenant, and two for Captain.

I would like to gently encourage you to make the following changes to the icons for the Ranking.

1) Remove the single bar from cadet, and place it in as the lieutenant level. I would recommend using the square diamond you are using in the Captain slot, or finding another icon that is a simple circle, or perhaps a cadet hat icon that looks like a West Point hat. (I will volunteer to find an appropriate one if you choose to make any changes.)

2) Move the oak leaf from Lieutenant to Captain. (or better yet, move it to Major, which is the actual level a gold oak leaf represents.

3) Flip flop the Brigadier and Colonel icons, as the icon you are using for Brigadier is the classic rank symbol for Colonel in all US forces, as well as some foreign services.

4) It would be nice to see the single star in the spot for Brigadier, but at this point, I don’t know where the king-hat should really go. I am mostly interested in seeing the symbols that are in use in the military associated with the correct ranks.

I hope this doesn’t sound petty. You have a good game site, but these choices of rank insignia detract from the appearance that this is a serious gaming site. You have rank insignia associated with the names of ranks that are clearly wrong makes it look like you have limited knowledge of basic military affairs.

I don’t mean to be insulting in any way, and am sending this note as a sincere effort to help improve your site. Like I said, I enjoy playing, and hope you keep adding boards.

I love the idea! I have had a lot of interaction with the military, Air Force brat growing up, as well as being in ROTC. I have thought about the ranks many times as well, but the only reason I haven't brought it up was because I figured since it was a world wide gaming site, they weren't trying to set them up as following particular countries.

I would love to see this idea implemented, and I am glad you brought this up :D

And the symbols themselves are a conglomerate of actual insignia that match the titles, mismatched insignia and titles, as well as some completely original insignia.

There was a big thread about new graphics a few weeks ago, but the search engine turned out nothing.

I just went to the 2nd page!! - I could just remember that it was a Qwert topic called "new ranks" or similar... so not too hard to find.

That was what I remembered to, but "new ranks" in the search engine struck out (I must have put some strange time limit or something :? ).

Edit: I too agree with the OP, a bit more RL connection would be a good thing for the ranks and their graphics IMO.

I have said before that I like this idea ... and particularly would like to see "cook" changed to something different. (apprentice cadet, latrine cleaner ... or??)

However, the "powers that be" have also already stated they don't want to change it.

If you feel strongly about this (I don't.. care enough to do more than say here I like the idea) .. then I would say to look up the old threads on the subject and present some really new ideas .. and maybe some kind of evidence that a lot of others agree... and you might possibly find the "powers tha be" (Lack) change their minds.
