I've run into it twice (in the same game!) where someone was attacking me in a country that I was trying to advance my armies into another territory. The game responds, when you select the number of armies you want to advance, by saying "illegal attack move" and then asking you again how many armies you want to advance. I'm pretty sure in one instance I selected 0 and it still came back like that (although I'm not sure, I was trying to do it fast) - so basically you are being attacked in a country you were just passing through, and you can't attack back, which you can in some other cases.
So basically I would be in country A attacking country B, and when I conquer country B, the other player starts attacking me in A from country C, and then I can't do anything, because I am stuck in the "advancing armies" phase.
That doesn't seem to me like it's working as intended. Is it?
You can get around this by rapid clicking on the advance button.
Taking an enemy on the battlefield is like a hawk taking a bird. Though it enters into the midst of a thousand of them, it pays no attention to any bird other than the one it has first marked.
How many times you join a game and theres a playier deadbeats and he doesn't lose any points but you do. Why don't we take points away from them. Make the rule If you start the game you got to finish it or else.
I can see someone hitting End Fortification is that case because its the button closest to select the destination of your armies. But only if they are the kind of people who don't read before they click...
Either way...
Use Firefox, Greasemonkey and this script to add confirmation dialogs to your End Attacks and End Fortification buttons.
That would be good. So far, that script has only failed me once, and I've caught myself a few times with it. I'm also the type to second-guess myself, which makes the script help.
Also, try fortifying China with Mongolia and Japan's armies, and fortifying the Western US with Quebec's armies. You need to break into Oceania and take over N.America before you get hosed. Consider a temporary alliance (3 rounds) with j2 to knock down G-myth's position before he over-powers you both.
I was a major back when 1600 was major. Now that I'm back, I get to easily win a bunch of games to get my rank. Thank the 'tards here who suck at this game.

Yep. I look at the button as I move my mouse toward it, reading the button is a by-product of looking at it. Reading everything is a habit I developed to avoid spyware.
