Andy, I can see you just don't want to get involved in this issue, but your response doesn't address the problem. If my nine-year-old daughter is in a game where she is beating the pants off some frustrated abusive 38 year old man who decides to unleash a stream of disgusting invective at her, then what good is your response? Are you suggesting that I should have guessed ahead of time by his screen name what he would have done to her, and put him on ignore? Or I should block her view of the computer monitor on a minute by minute basis, telling her when it's OK to take her move? No, obviously you are suggesting that she be deprived of playing on this site if I want to protect her from such niceties. That is a shame. An obscenity filter is not "blanket policing for everyone," it just gives us the option of not having to be subject to abusive language. It is fairly simple to implement.

Kindly explain how the tools you currently provide allow me, the user, to not have to be told to go f myself when I defeat someone I have never played against.

Since you will be with your daughter (being the concientious parent that you are), you can use that as a forum to point out how truly immature, disrespectful, lacking in imagination, etc, etc, that 38 year old is (and by-the way it is more likely another nine or twelve year old, NOT the 38 year old). That is your job. YOu cannot expect the world -- at large or ESPECIALLY on-line to comply with your standards -- whatever they are.

Games don't have a lot of cursing, just stick to games and don't let them go to forums, ESPECIALLY FLAME WARS!

Is everyone here a bunch of pussies? or wussies? Get the hell over it. In response to the guy who says that a game web site should be kid friendly... pull your head out of your bum. Where the hell can grown-ups hang out? It is ridiculous that you don't want your precious snowflake to see adult material like foul language. They have to grow up some day anyway. And it is rather silly to not monitor your son/daughter's internet usage.

anyway, why are people even offended at swearing in the first place? Oh noes, he said the S word or the F word, or (god Forbid) the C word. quit being dummys and live in the real world. or go back to Franco and facism

I agree whole-heartedly.

hypothetically; when you leave your child to be baby-sat by the TV, do you allow them access to your pay-per-view pin-code?

Well i hope not.

Would you leave your daughter to roam free, perhaps popping into local bars and strip-joints for crisps and a coke from the maternal bar staff and pole-dancers?

nope...

Do you allow your kid to go to school and exchange and experiment with swearwords with contemporaries?

yes, indirectly you do!

the internet is as diverse and free as the real world and you do not leave your child to freely wander, unchaperoned in every direction.
You do, indirectly, allow them (out of sight/site, out of mind) freedom to explore individuality in school and with friends!

You place an unfair and unbalanced responsibility on this site by asking it to be responsible for the continuing innocence of your child.

In doing so you diminish the 'experience for everyone else.

Do i wish to swear at a nine year old?
of course not, nor would i!

I do wish the option of expressing myself exactly as i wish, with people i know to be mature enough to enjoy it?

yes please! .. if that's alright with you of course.....

Being one of those abusive 38 year-olds I want to let you all know that letting your kid on the internet unsupervised is like sending your kid to a crack house for after school education programs.

If you let the computer babysit your kids, then your kids will learn about life from the computer.

This includes getting verbally abused by a 38 year-old fucktard.

And yes, I have kids. They are not allowed on the net without adult supervision.

The internet was not invented to babysit your kids, so don't try to use it for the same.

Kindly keep the Flames out of this thread. :)

I remember reading a suggestion about having the option to have Game Chat -- On/Off. Perhaps that would help the issue. If such an option was available in the My Settings page, you wouldn't have to worry about any impropriety.

I consider the escalation in 'language' and heat began with Hulmey swearing and using an allegory where-by he thinly veiled a threat to smash my teeth in.

Well it's ok, i am over it now ... took some Mogadon and came to terms with the fact that words really are just words on the internet.
I reasoned that he could not possibly know where i live and that perhaps the clumsy parable was intended to serve some other purpose; that he perhaps was puffing in order to caricature a certain propensity towards crudeness on the WWW.
The Internet is after all a very safe place to use any lyrical strategy.

Oh please, you have to face it that your 9 year old daughter is already probably swearing when she's not around you. I wouldn't be surprised if she is.

Quite right.. i was swearing like a trooper by 9.. By 15 i had decided to broaden my vocabulary and sample the richest morels of the English language.. By 25 i was swearing like a trooper again; this was used as punctuation and emphasis ... and also to buy time, so i could remember and draw on the reservoir of big words i had learned in the previous years. ;)

All language is good, in all its diversity!
Nasty intentioned abuse may not be.. but Nastiness is really about the cathedral of unpleasantness, not the building blocks of expletive!

How massively ironic.

Consider your debating privileges here revoked.

...then you should probably discuss the subject of sexual promiscuity with her, and tell her to save herself for somebody special.

Kids these days though eh? They just grow up so fast...

to be honest i find 'fucking dice, fuckety f*ck f*ck f*ck' a lot less abusive than 'i'll kick your fucking head in you immigrant cunt.'

But since the idea of censoring them is ridiculous, we can read them both, free as a bird.

Huzzah!

Bottom line -- you cannot expect the world to conform to your standards. The same applies in reverse. YOU are not expected to conform to anyone else's standards.

As for the "harm" that is caused by seeing a bad word ... if your child even knows what those words mean, then she has already been exposed .. and the only further "damage" is to show her how immature/uncreative some folks can be.
