Original post:

MrBenn wrote:The Classic Map is being Revamped

For those of us who have been here some time, the loss of the Classic Map was a sad day. The invasion of the Shapes was something that not even HG Wells or Arthur Clark had foreseen. From the pit of despondency, an elite squad of mapmakers were thrown together to assemble a replacement, and thus Classic Art was born! (Although Turtle World was almost a strong contender)

The time has finally come for Classic Shapes to be reinvigorated and be given the facelift it so strongly deserves and needs. The mapmaking elite - in consultation with the foundry moderators and lackattack himself - have given the green light for the map-formerly-known-as-world-cities to be revamped as the New Classic Map.

In order to proceed as a full revamp of Classic, there have had to be some changes from the map-formerly-known-as-world-cities. There can be no going back from here - so here's to a brighter, Classic future...

Many of the lines seem like they're different widths from the others. That's all I see that can be fixed at the moment.

Congratulations.

Little bit too pinkish on the title, otherwise sweet.

Your sig scares me a bit…

Your sig in the bottom right makes it seem too cluttered over there. Maybe moving it to the bottom left?

I like the legend a lot. It was clever to show it on a globe. Nice work!

Okay. I really liked the previous world cities map. It wasn't the same as the board game, but had the same playability. This new version in the same as the board game except it uses city names instead of country names? Am I the only one who thinks this is crazy? Won't we have legal problems again with this? At least with the world cities map, it didn't look like the classic map.

All of these discussions have taken place behind the scenes. The version of the map that is laid out here is the one that has been authorised by lackattack to replace Classic Shapes.

Well... i liked the World Cities better as it was fresh and uncluttered,
it was... well........ lets call it NEO-CLASSIC... New and old at the same time... "timeless"

Now that I've gotten that off my chest...

Let me say that I am VERY appreciative to have a REAL map again...

But.. well........... i simply MUST ask... any chance the World Cities Map can still happen?

Maybe move Madrid over from the bottom to the left of the circle. I'm getting it confuzed for a more southern spot. Lathough besides that, this map looks amazing!

Perhaps it will look different when there are numbers in the circles. But right now the map reminds me of the map in the movie War Games when all the nuclear bombs were going off all over the world. The circles look like explosions and the arc lines seem to be leaping to the next explosion.

I do appreciate all the work and look forward to the new map.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

My to do list at the moment
  • Move signature to bottom left corner, and flesh out the face a bit to make it look less like a Cheshire cat
  • Redo the flags to reflect the new countries (some cities are not represented and some flags probably shouldn't be there any more)
  • Adjust lines so that they flow better between each city. You will notice that the lines in the World Cities thread were much more fluid, which takes some time to achieve
  • Adjust the red in the title. I initially liked the light red because it fits well with the pastels of the city line, but a brighter color will go better with the CC logo. Shooting for a middle ground in the next draft.

Please give your comments on city changes ASAP. I'm open for swap suggestions if we can make the connections work, but big changes will be difficult later in the game (ie, once the new flag borders are created I will not want to change them unless there is a VERY good reason). Simple swaps, like Johannesburg vs. Cape Town can be done at any moment since they don't require a flag change or any broad connection changes. Of course we eventually have to settle on the "best" world city for those locales, and much of that discussion took place in the World Cities thread.

As for implementation, I believe the idea is to replace Shapes and Art (and at the same time, World Cities won't be added). I personally wouldn't mind leaving Shapes and Art, since they already exist and probably have a fan case. Historically we haven't kept multiples once a map is revamped, so that decision will lie with the Supreme Turtle.

Once again, is there a good reason why we've given up this city arrangement:
[bigimg]http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/1753/worldcities18.jpg[/bigimg]
for the old Pacific-split version with the traditional continent arrangement?

So this map is going to be THE classic revamp? In that case, some of the countries in Asia are messed up and you should change the connections. Other than that, this looks like a nice substitute! Although, how is this any different than what we were forced to take down? I think the old version (with America in the right) might avoid any legal trouble. :|

The current version (division on the Pacific) was chosen because it will be more recognizable to new players and more familiar to players who knew the original Classic. I know there are several advantages to the Pacific split in terms of cities (America and Oceania get more, for example) but the benefits of having a recognizable and familiar map outweighed the other options.

To be a revamped Classic this is the orientation we must proceed with, I don't think that point can be up for debate.

It was quite a struggle in fact!

"Why don't you add some arbitrary connections between these continents and cities?"

"The current gameplay was carefully designed to be as traditional as possible."

"Oh okay. How about adding a bunch of connections in this other region then?"

"Facepalm."
