Somewhat ironic given that the United States has the largest prison population in the World, both in actual numbers and as a per capita percentage.

I was thinking more along the lines of considering the problem and perhaps trying to diminish it, takes a bit of thought though so best you sit this one out.

Granted the post you responded to was provocative but you might want to address the point, why all these silly patriotic slogans, does anybody truly believe this stuff any more ?

Your argument is not even an argument and therefor invalid. I on the other hand make a very good case in only 2 (somewhat sarcastic) lines..

Of course they believe in it.. Even very smart people from the states actually think that the US is the greatest country in the world.. Even broke Texan whiskey-tango with no education and no job will go ballistic if you speak ill of their glorious homeland.. The US government has managed to make patriotism into a second religion as if not enough people in that country was duped by the first one..

Uh, wrong. The Persian Empire is obviously the greatest in the world.

Since you apparently think the military consists entirely of pussies, I'm wondering if you have ever met a Marine?

My ideal marine would hopefully be able to properly pluralize "pussy." That's just something that comes up regularly that they should be capable of dealing with.

I, for the life of me, can't imagine how effed up in the head I'd have to be to spend hours out of my day involving myself in foreign social/political problems when my own country was crumbling around me.

You people(you know who you are) are fucking ridiculous in every sense of the word.

You talk as though it's possible to ignore the US in the world forum.

And crumbling? I don't think the Swedes are "crumbling." If we had Zimbabweans chastising us for excessive civic pride, that's one thing. But countries that (compared to ours, which I love) do a decent job of governance to tell us that maybe we could actually learn from other people, to ignore that is to feed every stereotype of Americans out there.

Another masterpiece from the resident intelectual pygmy
How about actually debating for once rather than just spewing out garbage , I doubt you have the intellect to actually learn something new but it might just stop your brain from seizing up completely
Perhaps you haven't noticed but it is citizens of the USA who are clogging up this forum with endless rants about the end of the world and commies coming out of the woodwork, if you dont want the rest of us to comment then try acting like educated adults. This thread was motivated by the discussion on the death penalty ( started by an American Doh ! ) , I looked up prison statistics to see if Capital punishment was really a deterent. This is known as educating oneself as opposed to simply vomiting blinkered platitudes and soundbites, you might try it sometime.

I was thinking more along the lines of considering the problem and perhaps trying to diminish it, takes a bit of thought though so best you sit this one out.

GabonX's two step plan to reduce the prisoner population:

1. Execute all murderers and rapists unless another country is willing to accept them as political refugees

2. Legalize all substances and free all prisoners who are incarcerated for possessing small amounts for personal use. Use of a substance should be considered a civil liberty and if a person would break the law as a result of use they should be prosecuted under that statute.

1) Just a bit harsh, seems like the policy of a totalitarian state.

2) Debatable, it becomes a matter of civil liberties vs public good which is for another topic, not this.

I certainly think your second point has a great deal of merit, it makes no sense to criminalise people, and clog up the system, for relatively trivial acts. Dont think much of your first point though because apart from the usual arguments about Capital punishment A) It is far from unusual for innocent people to be falsely accused of rape and then convicted and B) It would turn many rapists into murderers because it would make conviction more difficult and they would have nothing to lose.

@ comic boy- Really. Name another modern service that is as widely known and respected that isn't some form of special forces.

@ Titanic- There are a few alleged incidents of civilian deaths at the hands of Marines. You are saying that they kill more civilians/allies than they do insurgents? That is quite simply absolute bullshit.

@ anonymus- First, what the hell do you know about it, you live in Germany. How many cases are there of Marines killing Marines? Maybe one or two, and those were in the states. yes marines are sent into more dangerous situations than other soldiers, but they do that because Marines can handle it. I would love to see you say that they are nothing to cannon fodder to the face of an actual Marine. They would be scraping you off the walls with a spatula.
