Adding Trips and Quads
I would like to see Trips and Quads in, and possibly singles as well. Doubles is a great format, but it doesn't so much measure best clans, as much as best doubles clans. Perhaps there could be some sort of option where, each home week, when sending out the games, a clan has to include 1 Doubles, 1 Triples, and 1 Quads minimum, the other 7 games are the choice of the clan.
Playoffs
Playoffs are nice, but I'm not sure I'd be happy playing a 20-30 round season only to lose the championship at the end. Still, I know playoffs are a part of a fair few leagues, so I can see the fors and against of it.
2 Divisions no cross-overs
Is there enough for 3 divisions? The reason I ask is that, the more divisions, the less games per season, more promotions/relegations, and therefore a much more dynamic league.
Longer schedule but with more bye-weeks
I'd much prefer a shorter schedule with less opponents. I really enjoy that you're setting all this up, but the scheduling in the first season was not only hectic, but also imbalanced, in that some clans got easier runs than others.
Series games split home and away during the week
Sounds like a good idea, makes sense

This post weakly parrots an opinion that has already been posted and is no use to me as a map maker.

A) I agree "I like it" posts are useless for honing a map
B) The second part, I
semi-agree with you oaktown. When I entered in the Central America competition, my first draft was pretty ugly. I got the second draft looking so much better, and being so much better supported by the community, by noting all the different aspects of the map (borders, font, colour scheme, texture, etc), and tallying how many positive and negative comments I got on each. This helped me to determine the broader community support. Take this for example:
Mapmaker: Can I get some feedback on the borders please guys?
User A-Pos: I like the borders, I think they contrast well with the territories
User B-Pos: Yeah the borders are good
User C-Pos: Map is looking good, nice borders
User D-Neg: The borders just don't do it for me at all. They are far too thick, the shading on them isn't right, it looks too dark, and it just isn't right. I can't see half the territory names because of them, if this got quenched I wouldn't play it, it would give me a headache looking at those borders. You should try a different brush, like the one used on XYZ map. The borders there look fantastic, and are much better than the borders on your map. Did you think these borders would be fine? They're holding the map back, and sorely need to be redone. If I was Foundry Assistant, I wouldn't give you the graphics stamp til you changed them.
User E-Pos: Borders are fine, don't need any more work IMO
User F-Pos: Nice map, I like the borders, they fit well and don't need re-doing
User G-Pos: Ditto
Now, assuming (and this is a big assumption) that these comments are all from Foundry semi-regulars who aren't mods/admin/assistants, so they're not determining whether it gets stamped or not, but their opinion can be taken to be honest and intelligent. Some users would take D's comments to heart, given the length of them. Sometimes it's good to stand back and get a broader perspective though, see what the community at large thinks. I'd contemplate what D has to say, but if it's 6 for and 1 against, I'd be more inclined to keep the borders the way they are

Also, to driverclit, when you attack neutrals in a 1v1 game, and then get stomped by your opponent, it is not the fault of the dice. The blame rests squarely on your shoulders.
Amen. Also, attacking when you are not rolling 3 dice is pretty stupid too. Don't know if the guy mentioned above does it, but I see noobs do it all the time and then wonder why the are loosing.
Yeah I recently played a game against a SFC/Lieut (he upped rank during game), it was no cards, and he made sure every round he took at least one territory off me. He was attacking 2v2, 2v1, 1v1 quite a bit, and I'd say he unnecessarily lost about 15-20 armies, which lost him the game. He had a better drop, and went first, outdeploying in every round for the first 10 rounds.
I'll only attack 2v1 on rare occasions, for instance if 1 more territory off the opponent will reduce their army bonus next go AND that territory will not border my opponents territories, so he can't take it straight back. In cards games I sometimes go 2v1 as well. 2v2 is crazy, and is a last resort when the game is all but a loss anyway, and only any good to break a continent/get a card in esc, but by that stage it's usually absolute desperation. 1v2 is pointless in every situation.

e_i_pi wrote:Mr Changsha wrote:While eipi and owen have been discussing the 1on1, 2on2 styles, I think this question also relates to multiplayer games as well. Now sadly I have no mathematical equations to illustrate my point (because I am a bit thick) but I would say that overall the better players rise up over a few games regardless of the dice in an individual game. However even in an individual game, if you think about what you need to win, you would add reading the board, reading the players, diplomacy, tactics, overall strategy...and dice. Looked at that way, dice are not a major part of even an individual multiplayer game and I certainly never win or lose a multiplayer singles game and think 'it was the dice wot won it' (British readers will understand).
Yeah good reply Chang. I discussed 1v1 mainly to eliminate as many elements from the equation as possible - 1v1 has no diplomacy, less cashing in tactics, no elimination tactics, etc. You're dead right about multiplayer games. I consider the best players at the site to be those who have excelled at multiplayer games, and I don't think I'll ever be one of those players, as I enjoy 1v1 and team v team games. The diplomacy and tactics that go on in multiplayer games can get really intense, especially if every player plays a good game, and doesn't suicide etc. In those sorts of games, dice are not as important as positioning, tactics, diplomacy, and patience.
Finally, if you want to really understand the minimal importance of dice go to sugs and bugs and begin reading through the dice complaints thread...all 40 odd pages of it. You'll notice that the vast majority of posters who complained about there dice, often repeatedly I'm sad to say, were/are fairly unsuccessful players. The point is they saw/see the dice as dominating their game (at least the 75% you mentioned) and the only players who see the dice as the most important factor are those that lack in the skills mentioned above.
True true. Most players that complain about the dice should be looking at their style of play for faults, not the dice. I must admit, I have on occassion had a spat about the dice. Sometimes they roll with you, sometimes against you. Two memorable moments in the past few days are:
* Deploy of 8, took out 1 single, lost 7 rolls against other singles
* Deploy of 24, took out two 3s, lost all spare armies in the process
But let's not turn this into yet another dice complaint thread

If you think the dice have it in for you, just stop rolling. Losing a card is rarely as devastating as losing 3-6 armies gaining a card. Also, if you keep larger stacks, whats to say they won't defend successfully, and give you a nice attack point next round? Patience, and knowing when -not- to attack are key skills in this game, especially in multiplayer
e_i_pi wrote:a.sub wrote:(1-x)75% + (x)50% = 67

dropping almost 10% simply by reducing the win factor by 5% which isnt much considering that you havent played more than 100 games and according to map-rank have actually lost more points than you have won on it.
Uh... okay, way to misinterpret. I never mentioned a 'win factor', I said that strategically, I'm better than about 80% of players. If me and 4 of my opponents, randomly selected, sat down and wrote out a 'how-to' guide, I'd assume there'd be one that would write better tips than myself. That's not 'win factor', that's understanding of the map.
As for the points loss, that's hardly relevant, and I assume you're trolling. I have to play opponents of about 1775 score to break even if I'm winning 2 out of 3 games (which I am). The fact that I've played opponents of lower score on average doesn't say anything about their strategic skill on that map. I've played stripes that have excellent strategy, and officers that suck. The fact that a players score is high doesn't say anything about their skill on a map - I thought you'd shown this already with the 5 games you won against KH?
e_i_pi wrote:owenshooter wrote:its the drop, it's your tactics, and if you aren't smart it is your dice. knowing when to stop attacking is just as important as knowing when to attack...-0
Never have truer words been spoken. Except that time when my gf said how good I was in bed.
e_i_pi wrote:It's not just the dice, it's the drop as well.
In terms of a pseudo-case study, I consider myself pretty good at 1v1 American Civil War, No Spoils, Chained, Sunny. In my opinion, AmCivWar is reasonably basic - not the most basic map, but pretty basic (moreso than Waterloo, Supermax, Feudal, etc).
The only 'luck' factors in this setting are dice and drop - cards don't factor, and chained forts is the least drop-dependant fort type IMO.
I've played the map many times, am familiar with the attack routes, bonuses, what is easy to hold, what is hard to hold etc. I would say that strategy-wise, on that map, I'm better than about 80% of the people I play. My win rate is about 67% (I believe). So if dice/drop on average screws you as much as it helps you, then dice/drop importance is about:
(1-x) * 80% + x * 50% = 67%
Solving for x:
x = 0.43....
So, I reckon dice/drop have influence on about 40-45% of games on basic maps. So long as the map is basic, and there are no cards, a player with perfect strategy/skill will win about 75-80% of the time.
Anyone out there who plays No Spoils 1v1 on a basic map with a record greater than about 80%, to debunk my theory?

e_i_pi wrote:MrBenn wrote:From a gameplay perspective, the map mostly feels balanced; the primary task should be to work towards the troublesome Gameplay stamp

The borders between regions could be made a little bit clearer.
I'm not a fan of the black/white minimap/screens - I think some colour would help tie things together. You could still pixellate the images to make them look like they're on a CRT monitor though.
The South Pole demarcation isn't too bad... perhaps some sort of cross-hatching might draw attention to it a little more, and make it more obvious that there is a slightly different attack rule there.
A visual identifier for the fleets/ports (ie an explanatory note on a legend) might assist (never underestimate the stupidity of some players

)
The graphics niggles are only niggles at this stage, and should be secondary to getting gameplay (including instructions etc) completely sorted.
Understood Benn, but it got the gameplay stamp ages ago. All it needs now are graphics and XML.
Graphics have gone round in circles for the past 4-5 updates. Every time I post a version, someone complains about a certain graphic aspect, I change it, someone different complains about what I just changed. Do you remember the whole "colour" problem? Three months. Three months of changing shades and hues. Brightness = 60%... WAY too dark. Brightness = 62% WAY too light. I think the only reason people stopped complaining about the colours was because even they got sick of bringing it up time and time again.
I still don't see what the problem was with this version:

Sure, the port icons need to be displayed somewhere, I'm thinking get rid of the impassables and one-way attacks, since they're self explanatory. Mind you, the moment I ditch them someone will have a whinge. Really, it's pissing in the wind IMO. When you look at the problems with so many of the maps that have already been quenched, it makes you wonder why I'm copping so much flak. Let's have a look at some of the glaring problems with maps that have recently made it through:
Castle Lands - The NW continent is two different colours, neither of which corresponds to the legend. Walls are listed as impassable, but can they attack each other or the castle or vice versa? Who knows...
Indian Empire - 'Ahmed.' province isn't the full name of the province, I am copping flak over Transantarctic being shortened to 'Trans.', and Pine Island being abbreviated to 'Pine Is.' Why is it fine on one map, and not another?
WWI Ottoman Empire - Ottoman Europe = +2 bonus, and it -isn't- a coded neutral start? France + Italy (both neutral) = +2, Ottoman Europe (which can drop / be taken 1st round) = +2. Huh?
San Marino - The border between Fiorentino and Ca'Rigo is almost imperceptable. Is it even there, or is it blocked by mountains?
These are legitimate complaints to do with gameplay and visibility issues, yet the maps have passed through the Foundry unabated.
I honestly have limited time for this sort of thing now. Working on something for 3-4 hours, just to have some random come along and piss all over it in a few sentences, like what has happened in the past, simply doesn't do it for me. I've made so many concessions on the map, and the Foundry have made none. Your call guys... I've had enough of dealing with the fickle to-and-fro of people's opinions on the way it looks...

lol I found it interesting that he has so much time to find all these quotes........ but I also at times find pimpdaves posts rather annoying , yet funny at times... more so then reading some of these story book paragraphs of some members.

It took me like 5 minutes guys... just search his posts, then quote them, copy and paste into the thread.
Whatever, I'm just trying to help eipi out. He was asking for the help.

was only teasing you...although the "puking" pictures were rather disgustingly annoying, you have to admit that one!

And I stopped because you asked me to. It just forced me to find better ones.
But I don't think vomit gifs should be HEARBY OUTLAWED or something. The only one that was gross was the dog puking, but the Team America gif? I thought you were seriously being ridiculous with that one.
Also, you guys took them all down. I had some funny ones up there, including some images I created myself. Actually, thanks for reminding me. I'm still annoyed, perplexed and slightly paranoid about that, because all it took was a mild reference to vomit, and it seemed to be completely out of line...
*sigh*
EDIT: Sorry, there were no truncheons involved. I wasn't banned or anything, I was just politely asked to stop, so I changed course. That was actually decent moderating, in that it kept the peace, set the tone, and required no stupid bannings.
