Taxes and Tipping

If my bill is $100, and there is a 10% tax rate, then my bill is $110. If I want to tip %20, do I tip $20, or $22? Do you tip on the tax?

What if the bill is $100 and the the tax rate is 50%. Now your total is $150. Do you tip $20, or do you tip $180?

Tip the bill without the tax... in the US doubling the tax is a typically decent tip
and if you appreciated the service or it is a place you frequent...
consider adding a little extra.

In the US, where the tax is seperated you can tip on just the meal if you wish. In many places, tax is just included so tipping on the overall total is just easier.

That said, If its a restaurant, 10% is pretty low. Generally it's 15% for OK service and 20% or more for good service.

And, if you happen to make a big mess or otherwise cause difficulties (as my toddler son tends to do), then a flat additional amount is a nice gesture.

No tipping is required. However, if you don't tip-- you might want to be sure you won't be going back any time soon! ;)

if you get really bad service it's customary to leave a tip of one penny. this is apparently to let the server know that you didn't forget, you just fucking hate them

that said, stiffing someone making less than minimum wage is kind of a dick move even with bad service, so tip anyway unless the server is truly evil or something

the quality of food has nothing to do with the waiter and once again even with bad service it's good to remember that the guy serving you has a shitty, shitty job with awful pay

Here's my feeling:

If the service was awful, I tip a penny...I want them to know that I considered tipping, but determined that they did not deserve one. If you don't tip at all, then they'll likely presume that you're either an ass who just doesn't tip or that you simply forgot (thus taking the blame off of themselves). This happens VERY RARELY, because it has to be truly awful service.

If the service was only ok, I tip 20% (if it's not an even dollar, then I round up or down to the nearest).

If the service was excellent, then I've been known to tip up to 50% (very rare), but at least 30%.

Oh, and as to the tax...no, that does not figure into the percentage for me.

I disagree with you about the "so tip anyway"...I'm sorry, but if they're that bad at their job, then they need to work harder at it. If they want a better wage, they should be willing to work to get it (just as I do).

My recent trip to Mexico/US was my first experience with tipping, as in Australia we don't tip (unless the service was really good.. payrates in Australia are generally good enough to not depend on tips)

It was certainly kind of weird. For one the prices on the menu didn't include tax - i just don't see why they don't add that to the total price and say 'tax included'

Either way, having to tip was an awful experience, especially when the service was shit, and especially seeing as the US was so expensive in the first place! Though, on our return to LA from Mexico we tended to still talk to all the waiters in Spanish (seeing as they are mostly all Mexican) and they all loved it! They probably actually earnt their tips on that morning.

I kind of agree with you on this, but I look at it on more of a case by case basis. If I get poor service at a restaurant from someone who obviously doesn't care, or isn't even trying, or isn't nice at all, or even is actually an asshole, then I won't tip (or I'll pull the small change tip gag). But I've gotten poor service where the waitstaff were simply inexperienced or short-staffed and overwhelmed by too many customers and it's not really their fault. I'll leave a minimal but decent tip in that case. Or even if it is their fault but it's clear that they at least are trying to do a good job or even just acknowledge their poor service by being apologetic, I'll still give them a small but reasonable tip.

You should always tip; just let the degree of service determine how much. Waiters and waitresses require tips in order to get their pay. That's why they have a lower minimum wage than normal.

Actually, I think you have it the wrong way around. Their minimum wage is so low that they require tips to earn a 'decent' income.

It would be nice if some pay scheme was introduced where a CEO couldn't earn more than ten times the wages of the lowest paid worker in a corporation. That would fix both the low minumum wage and the exorbadant pay rises CEO's like to routinely give themselves

What if a CEO contributes more than 10 times the worth of the minimum wage to the company?

Then the CEO has clearly too much money and is a capitali$t pig scum, and thus, must be dealt with accordingly

Is that was I was referring to when I quoted you? No, it wasn't. If service is absolutely horrid, you should leave a one penny tip, like it was said before. However, you have to look at the situation, see StiffMittens post. The fact is, any waiter would take a better job if it was possible, if they could, but that isn't exactly always the case. It's not like they can just walk into an office building and get a new job.

No, waiters rely on their tip for pretty much their whole income. My father has been a waiter for a number of years, and he doesn't even factor in his actual hourly wage into how much he makes in a day. It was a good day if he made lots of tips, and that's it. You cannot survive on simply the lower-than-minimum wage you are given as a waiter.

I have left a penny tip many times...............One other thing i really hate is when the server is to nice.......i hate it when they try to kiss your ass for a tip,and for that i will not leave them a tip cuz of ass kissing

Tipping's a disgrace. It allows the owner to exploit the worker into accepting lower basic wages. The practice should be outlawed. Obviously the wages of the staff should be increased to a decent level that allows an acceptable standers of living. Paying tips just lets the employer off the hook.

That said, I always tip (never on my card as the crafty employer sometimes takes 50%!) 'cause I used to survive on my tips back in the day when I was working in a bar.

I nearly always tip 20% (post-tax). If the service was bad, I'll tip 15%. If the food was bad, that's not the server's fault, so I stick with the 20%.

Wait up a minute, why should waiters/waitress's get tips anyhow? I know of plenty of people that work in shitty jobs that don't get a look in on the tipping front..

How about the Kitchen Porter who is cleaning the dishes, or the carrot chopper who is splicing the vegetables? Why shouldn't these characters get a slice of the pie? Lets face it they are contributing to making the meal more-so than the robots that are delivering it..

How about the check out chicks in the supermarkets? They don't get any financial appreciation, likewise the guys who pack your groceries, what do they get for making your foodstuff secure and safe for the journey home? Nothing! How about the guys who sweep the streets? Do you offer them any money when you are passing them late at night, Nope thought not.

This list could go on and on, so lets skip it for a minute, what makes those waiters and waitress 's, plus Taxi drivers so fucking special, that in America (Not England), it is compulsory to tip them?

If you crash the Taxi whilst I am in it, I will Sue you, if you spill the tea on me whilst I am in a restaurant I will Bawl you out.
Do these Muppet's need a prize for completing a task that any moron can do?

Because waiters earn lower than minimum wage and are expected to make up the difference with tips. You cannot make a living wage off of a waiters minimum wage.
