Wait! Did you hear that whooshing sound?

A small asteroid buzzed by Earth Monday, though only real astronomy geeks in the Pacific would have noticed.

The rock, estimated to be no more than 200 feet wide, zoomed past our planet at an altitude of 40,000 miles at 1:44 p.m. universal time — or 8:44 EST.

Dubbed 2009 DD45, it was discovered only on Friday by Australian astronomers.

Forty thousand miles may sound like a lot, but it's only about one-seventh of the way to the moon, and less than twice as far out as many telecommunications satellites.

Had 2009 DD45 hit the Earth, it would have exploded on or near the surface with the force of a large nuclear blast — not very reassuring when you consider humanity had only about three days' notice.

According to the Australian news Web site Crikey, the asteroid is likely to be drawn in by Earth's gravity, meaning it may return for many more near misses in the future.

The good new is that this will give more ammunition for that group of astronomers who want the UN to build an asteroid defense space platform. If I remember right they were only asking for 1million to build one.

A million dollars doesn't sound like much if the return is an effective asteroid defense system. You would think it would cost more...

m and b are pretty close to each other, so maybe it should've been a billion. Still, it's less than the banks are costing everyone.

The odds of a space defense platform being at the right orbit at the right time are pretty slim arn't they? It's not a question of if, it's a question of when. So: Live large, not long.

I always wondered if it was a typo. They wen't before the UN this past year to ask for funding.

It's supposed to be a special satelight that attaches itsef to an asteroid, and then gently nudges it to change it's flightpath. If they use some deralict space junk-craft it seems like it wouldn't cost a whole lot. Still, a million doesn't sound like much.

Do they mention approximately (which half of the Earth I suppose) where the asteroid would have hit assuming it hadn't scraped past us?

You make reference to 2012...then you state that a near miss from an asteroid is "actually" scary. It seems that you were being sarcastic about 2012.

You should realize that the whole 2012 scare is based on scientific fact.

We should expect an increasing number of asteroids coming close to Earth, and possibly colliding with Earth, over the next several years.

The easiest thing to do is go to YouTube and search for 2012...look for videos on polar shift or pole shift.

This one (below) shows a segment from a TV show that touches on it...but it leaves out the information that our solar system, which kinda vibrates or cycles up and down on the gravitational plane of the black hole in the center of our galaxy, is passing through the plane over the next few years and is therefore more likely to be bombarded by objects that are caught in the gravitational pull of the black hole's gravitational plane. We are passing through an area where there is a lot of asteroid traffic, if you want to think of it that way.

But I just did a quick search.

There are some videos out there produced by some "way out there" type of people. But look at the content. Just because some people seem a little wacko, doesn't mean they are entirely wrong. You will find other videos with very reasonable, intelligent and educated people telling you nearly the exact same thing.

When I was trying to sort this stuff out a while ago, I was watching a series that was kinda hokey, but seemed to have good information. In this series, they interviewed this "World Renowned Physics Professor" and asked him a bunch of straight forward questions about the black hole, the gravitational plane, polar shifts, and whether we have gone through periods of social and technological evolution and then experienced catastrophic natural or man-made disasters resulting in near extinction and social and technological collapse before. The "expert" confirmed that everything they were talking about is based on scientific fact, or at least is supported by a lot of scientific evidence. So I Googled this guy's name. There was his picture. There was his schedule of appearances as guest speaker to events in the mainstream scientific community. There were his books on a variety of scientific subjects. He really is a renowned and greatly respected scientist within the scientific community. To me, it gave some credibility to this whole theory. So I looked into it a little more.

The more I looked into it, the more it seems that science, religion, and ancient prophecies are coming together and agreeing about what is going to happen in December of 2012.

Anyways, there is a bright side. There is always a bright side.

I'm personally about as concerned over the 2012 destruction of the world as I've been about every predicted apocalypse the last 1000 years. That is, not at all. Our destruction will likely come at our own hands, and I highly doubt anyone could predict the year it happens (outside of sheer luck), let alone the month.

I agree wholly, as I often do, with Frigidus here.

However, that doesn't mean that I think that Prowler is full of BS or is something that I don't find interesting or want to know more about.

Sounds legit... and our poles are shifting. Sounds interesting.... I'm a space case anyway. Thanks for the tip, I'll be looking into it.
