I purchased a 1959 RISK board game today... for a DOLLAR... :shock:

I have a pretty good collection of vintage games, but getting the 1959 RISK game with a box that is in quite good condition really made me smile... there is tape around all the edges, but the rest of the box has excellent color, and virtually no wear. Not bad for a game that is freaking fifty years old !

This graphics of the box and of the cards differ from the 1963 board game... otherwise, it is the same...
This particular game was missing the original dice, but what do you expect for a dollar.
I haven't counted the number of wooden blocks yet, but i'm happy regardless...

I have a few other versions of RISK as well which all use plastic pieces...
including later versions of (classic) RISK , Castle RISK, and RISK 2210.

So this made me wonder... how many people here have RISK games... and more specifically, how many have the old style with the wood blocks for armies...

I have the vintage* game with wooden armies.

I have the version with plastic armies that are Roman numerals.

I have the version with plastic armies that are soldiers, cannons and mounted horses.

*You can buy a new reproduction of the 1959 version of the game, the one in my collection is the authentic original.

"bookshelf games" i think they're called, from Target if i remember correctly
I have that one also... well, 2 actually... i'm keeping 1 sealed...

i only have the newer verion with the plastic horsemen, footsoldiers and cannons. I got to know risk in the plastic roman numeral version at my grandmothers though. oh, and i own LOTR risk plus expansion set.

I have the recent 'retro' edition in a wooden box with wooden pieces etc.

I played with some friends the other week, and got so frustrated having to count territories at the start of each turn to work out how many armies I would get... I had borderline 17/18/19 territories for a lot of the game, and kept losing count.

Having said that, there's something lovely about moving piles of wooden cubes around instead of looking at digital numbers...

I have an ancient set inherited from my father that has wooden pieces. I'm not sure if its from '59 or '63, it's released by Waddington's though. To think, I've been playing on it since 1980, almost 30 years with the same set..

Johnny and I came across a wooden set at an auction, in mint condition.
It was the find of the day!
I think he paid about 40$ for it.

I have the 63 board...same year as me ;o)

Also have the original Monopoly set thats older than I and the original LIFE game too.....all fun - but a frikking BUCK....I LOVE garage sales ;o)

I have an 80s something with plastic star shaped pieces.... the armies are just anoyingly shaped...
an '05
LOTR Risk
and both Star Wars.
Woulda gotten the other limited edition movie boards like the Transformers one... but then I found CC.

Night Strike was just pointing out General Discussion is for Conquer Club based discussion. Risk, though similar to our style of World Domination (;)), is more properly discussed here.

May I refer you to the Simpsons episode where they reinacted Steven Kings The Shining

I learned on, and still have a set from the 70's or early 80's with the plastic star-shaped pieces, and just recently acquired a new German board, with the horses and such. I don't speak german, but it's the same game, and it was free.

I just noticed that my 1959 cover has North America as the center of the world...

But at least we yanks did a reasonable job of drawing the outline of Europe on the board...

Take a look a few posts above at Waddington's board, and you'll see how incredibly badly the brits drew North America...

As for the board itself (ignoring the box), the 1959 version looks the same, except that the edges are white, as is the back side of the board... While the 1963 board is Blue.

My parents bought us kids a Brand New RISK board that had the plastic pieces, but we always preferred to play with the beat up 1963 game we found at a garage sale... lol... they just shook their heads... afterall, how could they know how much nicer it is to play with the wood pieces... :mrgreen:
