Japan
OK, I've never done a map before but I'm convinced I have the skills to see it through and would love to make a contribution to this great site. I think CC lacks a good Japan map and would benefit from it. However, I'm weighing how it would work out.
There's one option of doing a strictly modern Japan based on current provinces. Continent territories based on islands, for Honshu maybe two 'continent' bonuses and Hokkaido with two as well, that way to keep it balanced. Perhaps a boat or plane connection from Hokkaido to Kyushu?
Then there's a regional map centered on Japan. Do Japan, Vladivostok region Russia, the Koreas, Chinese East Coast, Taiwan, Northern Philipines. For added excitement add in Okinawa and Iwo Jima, No farther south than Hong Kong though. In previous discussions of Japan, many have said this would make the game more circular and better for gameplay.
Anyway, is there any interest in a map like this? I think it would be a great addition to the map choices.

Re: Japan
Here's an picture of the second idea as far as continents go, I'd have to group a few of the chinese provinces and japanese provinces to make bigger territories. Okinawa,Tsushima, Iwo Jima, Hong Kong and Macao as conquerable provinces. The other cities in red dots would be incorporated into the provinces save maybe Tokyo, Pyongyang, Seoul, Vladivostok and Beijing.

Re: Japan
So you would base this map on the modern time?
Or would you step back in time and maybe into the feudal time.
I'm not confirm with Asian history.
I know about the Korea conflict, WW 2 and what happened in Japan at this time and I read some books about Japan back 200-400 years ago.
But I think I never heard about a event in history where all nations were involved.
Well, WW2 maybe, but this would focus on japan.
So you want to make map that is based on war?
Or should it be more based on economy.
(i hope you get the point

Re: Japan
I'd like to base it on modern times with a focus on economy, so then the map would play like a hypothetical war based on assessed strengths.
I considering doing a map of 1905 Japan and throwing Sakhalin (northern most island in the archipelago) and Formosa (Taiwan) to Japan and having a united Korea to play with. This could also put Hong Kong, Macao and Hangchow as colonial territories with a 1 man bonus for holding.
World War I also involved all the powers on the map, Korea was a Japanese colony then, and China had sided with the Allies, as did Japan. To an extent the Russo-Japanese war involved all three as most of the battles took place on Chinese soil.

Re: Japan
Sounds interesting.
But what would make this map special. At the moment I have no idea about it. You might think about special connections, or some kind of malus in general (as frost bite on AoR2) oder a malus for 2 Boni hold at the same tame. (Maybe Russia is not in harmony with Japan) or something.
I would love a map with new Graphics AND a new Gameplay. Not a standard one.

Re: Japan
Actually, that's an interesting concept. Perhaps there is a key bonus for holding one continent territory and but no bonus for holding two. Thus simulating supply lines and the difficulty of holding a conquered territory. Perhaps alter the reinforcement allotment to its one man for every two territories. That could alter the gameplay to make it a little more interesting....
Perhaps there could be an added bonus for holding cities, one man per city or something.
I'd definitely throw in some rivers and mountain ranges as well no matter what I decide on the gameplay.

Re: Japan
I'm Japanese-American, so I have a personal interest in this map - unfortunately, what has killed it in the past has been the lack of efficient methods of grouping it into continents. It's very awkwardly shaped for a CC map. You'd have a lot more luck using Hokkaido or one of the smaller islands.

Would you prefer to see a strictly Japan map or do you like the idea of a far eastern map centered on Japan?
El-Presidente: That looks quite good. Something about Hokkaido being way over there doesn't set right. But if a Japan only map is decided on, it may be the best option.
What about factoring cities into the map? They're already being used to link the islands, what if we included more and did a city to city attack plan as well, abolishing the sea routes.

This first link was the original Japan map, which was started long ago. There are no pictures left, but the discussion is still there. This guy has a gorgeous map that fit nicely in the allotted space. Too bad his computer crashed and he lost it.
Here's a couple others that are in development. I think they are both on vacation or abandoned at the moment. I know the biggest hurdle is fitting the long banana shape into the board size, without wasting so much screen real estate.

In order to solve the problem of the banana shape I put in the inset map of the to island. I thing it worked well but i'm not sure.

Re: Japan
I like the bonuses and border divisions and ran with them. However, i included Okinawa with a whopping one man bonus.
Also I thought perhaps I would abolish all island links and have many cities that can attack each other. See the grid to the right.

why don't you (Mr. Helix) post the picture you used for the background here so what ever design we have can have that background.

Re: Japan
It's nothing special. i just googled Japanese prints and wave. There's a number of different prints that involve the ocean.
But here it is, I just used a close up shot of the 'great wave'
So no one seems to keen on the layout, any reasons or is there something I can do to improve it?

Re: Japan
Well for one I think the cities aren't a good idea … unless you cut them down and use it in addition to the counties. But other than that it seems very cramped to me. I think that the borders are unnecessary if you are just using cities – just use lines to connect them. Also, I think a white font would work better.

Re: Japan
Hmm. What if I cut down the cities to maybe provincial capitols? That way I can keep the idea of using the cities as gateways to the other islands and at the same time decramp the map. That'll put me at 42 territories.
El-presidente... I'm not to keen on a ancient Japan map, to be honest. Not saying it should be done, but for my own project I want to do modern Japan. When you do get your Ancient Japan map up, I'll be glad to assist though.

Here it is, There are 2 ways to win, holding the 6 shrines or conquering everyone else.
The color got messed up because the background which was like parchment colored doesn't work when I put it on the internet.

Re: Japan
I think it would be fine. Madagascar is a terrible CC layout, and it is on here. Also, Iceland has territories that are almost entirely in a line, the only difference is it is a circle. The point is, in many cases there is only one way to get from point A to point B.
As for the background, I think parchment with Ink Paintings would be very nice, and less distracting.
Google "Japanese Ink Painting" to see more, but here is one example.

Just my 2 cents.

Re: Japan
That looks very good with some (obvious) graphic touching up. Regions is spelled well … I just spelled it. And nice background. Once you submit a draft I will take a full look at it.
