If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in Delta Airlines one year ago, you would have $49.00 today.
If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in AIG one year ago, you would have $33.00 today.
If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in Lehman Brothers one year ago, you would have $0.00 today.
But, if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the aluminum cans for recycling refund, you would have received a $214.00.
Based on the above, the best current investment plan is to drink heavily & recycle. It is called the 401-Keg.
A recent study found that the average American walks about 900 miles a year.
Another study found that Americans drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year.
That means that, on average, Americans get about 41 miles to the gallon. Makes you proud to be an American.

Nice.
Re: 401-Keg
No way does the average American walk 2 and a half miles a day. Not in a MIIIIIIIIIILLION years.
I once saw an article that said that the average American walks for less than 20 minutes A WEEK, including walking around the office, up stairs etc.
EDIT: Can't find the article quickly, but heres one that refers to it http://ask.yahoo.com/20061003.html

Dude, I live in NYC, and let me tell you, it's seldom that I DON'T walk anywhere...
I'm sure the city folks of America must offset the country folk in their pickups. At least a little bit... It's hard to be fat here. One actually has to TRY to be a Tubby McFattyPants, given the amount of walking we all do (or cycling, which I do frequently).

Most college students walk or ride bikes all over their campuses. I ride to and from home as well.
Farmers walk a lot through the pastures, fields, etc.
A lot of people go to the gym now to get their exercise.
I believe you may be surprised... You are categorizing everyone into one upwardly mobile group... Which is a bad idea.
Also, it's a fucking joke, guy... Chill out and laugh. It may do you some good.

Lovely.
The perfect answer when you're nagged for spending all your money on beer.
Though unfortunatley you ahve to live somewhere with a recycling refund.

I can vouch for the NYC walkers. My friend and I went to Manhattan for a quick vacation, and we probably walked 15 miles a day. There's no sense in renting a car, cabs can get expensive quick, and a lot of things are within mere miles of each other. We would walk from our hotel to the Empire State Building, then to Central Park and all around the park. Then to the south end of the borough to see the World Trade Center site.
When it comes to everyday life for me, I basically hike for a living. 10-12 miles a day isn't abnormal. And it's the same way for most of the people in the area that I live. So, yes, I could see the average person walking quite a bit.
