Is there a feudal japan map? if not then does that sound like a good idea?

I was planning on this too... A map on Japan in the Sengoku era (16th century).

there have been various attempts at making a japan map, but the shape of the region in extremely difficult for a CC map. Since Japan is so narrow, most of the square map area is wasted space, and the individual territories are so small that you can't fit the army counts.

That said, a little bird told me that you may be seeing yet another attempt at a japan map very soon. As in very soon. Exactly what era it will reflect could be open for discussion.

Is it just me, or has every recent idea of yours been preempted by someone else? Romania, Japan...it felt like there were more

In fact, I have thought about 2 possibilities.
1. Take the whole map of Japan as in the end of 16th century. Unite too small territories under the same Lords or belonging to nowaday areas. The territory is longer than larger by far, but we can have the number of armies on the sea coast, meaning half of it in the water. However, the territories remain for the most part in a row, even if we can make frontiers with islands (Shikoku, Kyushu or even Sado).
2. Take the only part of Japan that is interesting historically in the 1580s: the territory of Oda Nobunaga/Toyotomi and Tokugawa. From Bizen to shimotsuke for instance. See the bottom of the following page: http://www.geocities.com/azuchiwind/map.htm
One can have larger territories and more neighbours. Moreover, we can have bordering territories (East and West) instead of being forced to draw water all around the map.

I've thought through the 2nd solution. With the only map of Honshu in the 1560, we can follow the battles that occured at Oda Nobunaga's epoch. We start on Honshu with the few big territories and many smaller ones (which would be grouped), even independant kingdows (neutral territories) and they will compete to conquer the whole main island of Japan. From Mori's territories to Hojo territories, the map is more like a rectangle. We cut off Kyushu (not of a great importance in this war, though Japan with just 1 main island seems a bit strange) and Hokkaido. We even don't have to draw the whole territories of the North, if we make here the border of the map.
Reinforcements and bonuses would be as in the good old ways. We could have 6 to 9 continents (Mori, Uesugi, Saito, Ashikaga, Hojo...), neutral armies in the beginning. Every player could begin with at least 2 territories in the same continent. We could even make some territories into castles where a bonus could be obtained (with holding 1 or at least 2 of them). And even on 40 territories, the map would be playable.What do you think of that ?

sengoku japan would be cool i guess, i liked unit 2s japan when it was being made, the graphics are old now but...

What about some period of time when Japan had territories in China?
Wouldn't that make for a friendlier shape?

Well, a draft is better than a long speech as I was told. I'll try something within the next days on my last idea (Honshu and even Shikoku).

I'm not as good as I thought with theGIMP. Create something from nothing is easier
I want your advice on this before continuing.

Here comes my idea for this map (follow it on the blue map given in the previous link):
- Mori: 13-26 = 14 territ (though I can make it 9 with the modern borders)
- Ouchi: 29-33 = 5 territ
- Ashikaga: 27, 28, 34-39, 41 = 9 territ
- Saito: 42, 42, 47, 48, 52 = 5 territ
- Imagawa: 44-46, 57 = 5 territ
- Uesugi: 49-51, 54, 50, 66-68 = 8 territ
- Takeda: 53, 55, 56 (bombards 62 from 56) = 3 territ
- Hojo: 58, 59, 61-65 = 7 territ
I would have 5 neutral territories from the beginning: 34, 63-66
This makes: 8 continents for 56 (or 51) territories.

In fact, there are castles everywhere, so I can't follow the idea of bonuses on castle territories. Mountains are also almost everywhere, therefore I can't add impassable mountains or even rivers. But Japan is quite linear , so the shape of the territ will do for the impassable ways.

OK, OK, I'm doing a rough map for now. Thus we'll see if we can see the smallest territories.

There's some place for bonuses, legend and decorations...
I wasn't able to put the name of each territory where I wanted it excatly but it's already readable, even with such a font
I aim a map with equivalent and intricated territories, with many neutral territories from the beginning, thus leading to a complicated strategy for the bonuses.
