Mafia, my friends, is back

Post by jnd94 »

Yes, I think after the mafia depression we have been experiencing for the past few months, we are back. There are some good new players, and fun looking games. :P I can't wait. :D

Because they cut interest rates. It won't last.

Let's get back on track, though. I'm having a lot of fun playing mafia games right now.

LOL I cant believe there was a real person called Suggs. And a chief petty officer.
But I meant Friedman. Which you got. So now I've ruined it

It just struck me the ohter day how a few Yanks on CC keep saying "this recession" when the US economy is still growing! (very slowly, admitedly).

Suggs was also the lead singer from Madness, whose song Our House was the basis for a CC map.
Interestingly, a Madness concert at Finsbury Park was the first recorded incident of a live concert causing an earthquake.
Read the bit at the bottom.

er...mate, thats who I'm named after. Madness are one of my favourite bands of all time.
Suggs wasnt his real name (Graham MacPherson) hence my comment.
But you are dead right about the Madstock earthquake-30,000 people ALL jumping up and down at the same time-incredible.

I was at the 3rd Finsbury Park concert in 1996-EPIC.

Interesting you say about the Our House CC map-i thought that might be something to do with the song (their only USA hit, btw) Our HOuse, but i cant see any trace in the map, which is a shame.

Right, pedantic rant over!

Yes, we are already in a recession.

And a recession is not the same as depression. It means our economy is getting sluggish, so the fact that we are growing incredibly slowly fits.

No. That was my point. Christ, it took some one long enough so i could show off  :)
A recession is defined as TWO CONSECUTIVE quarters of negative growth.
In other words, the usa economy would have to be shrinking for six months.
So technically, an economy can shrink for one month, but if it grows again the next month, it has ot been in a recession.
The US economy is still growing.
No matter how slowly an economy is growing, it cannot be in a recession. (By definition growth is the opposite of recession)

The US economy has been slowing down. The growth has been slower.
But no recession yet.

Of course, one important qualification to this. The USA is a vast country, so it is perfectly possible that in some PARTS of the US, they are already in recession.
But generally pwople talk about national growth rates.

The point: no recession.

What people mean, is that they FEEL that times are tough-because (to simplify) they are getting richera LOT slower than they were.

The so called "Feel good factor" has gone. So people feel they are in a recession, when in fact they are still getting richer. But by such a tiny margin, they don't notice.

Well, I'm a New Yorker, and even I'm nationalistic enough to consider the whole nation to be in a recession when other states are. For example, the major obstacle to Florida holding its primaries again is because, I quote from somebody who knew what they were talking about, "[it] is in a state of economic shock."

I do concede that you seem to know about it more than I do. However, my history teacher, who is a great teacher, seems to think we're already in a recession. In matters where I know little, I take his side, since we pretty much always agree anyway. It's actually kinda scary how much our views match.

your history teacher is wrong. Two quarters of neg growth is the criteria.

Actually I'd already told a fair few people like Sierra that I was sending invites that weekend because it was when I broke from college. Should have PMed you, sorry for not keeping you informed.

Well, I wasn't sure on looking at it either, but This post by the maps creator says it is, so....

Madness are one of my favourite bands too, I've got the video of the original Finsbury Park concert (among other things), which includes a clip at the end of the newsreader announcing the earthquake.
