I have no hard evidence, but whenever I see specialists who focus on specific map types, they nearly all have very high rankings, and sure enough in the token instances in which you join the map, you find yourself usually beaten as you're navigating an unknown map type with obscure rules and formatting or win conditions and they already know the optimal approach
i could be mistaken, but it feels like we're getting very skewered rankings as a result of this, the equivalent of where some bughouse chess player in central park would have a higher FIDE than Magnus Carlsen
i realize this isn't really a problem, if people want to farm elo in niche formats they are free to do so, or those who just prefer those formats can enjoy the benefits, but i strongly feel like we'd have a much better experience here without the incentive to play weird maps and rules in order to push small advantages and where elo wasn't calculated in those formats, or was calculated for a different pool, ie everyone has normal and alt rankings
Change ELO based on map type

Re: Change ELO based on map type
I'm not sure how this could ever be implemented in a fair way tbh nor do I think it is really necessary. Those games you are joining are public games and you are able to see all of the games the player has played before and hence know that they may be an expert on it so join at your own risk
To your other point tournaments are often a great place to try different maps with a potentially non-expert opponent either community run ones or the map marathon and map masters auto tournaments that have been run in the past and probably will happen again in the future. Alternatively you can maybe look at the forum callouts to look for opponents that are less familiar with maps but I don't go over there so not sure how active or easy it is to find like minded opponents
That or learn to love random map as you never know what your going to get with it apart from no beta maps

I also do not have the ability to calculate the exact ELO in a specific measurement, in the future when I have information I am ready to share.Poor Bunny
Re: Change ELO based on map type
I play games on another site that, I feel, needlessly complicated ELO to the point where it's maddening. You often get less points for winning a 4 player game than you do for winning a H2H game and things like that. Yes, even when rankings are relatively equal. As such, I love the simplicity of how it is done here and feel any tinkering would make it worse.
I respect the great players who have rankings below what they would have if they didn't fearlessly take on anyone on any map.
