There is no exact date for the end of the Wars, but the Battle of the Upper Washita River in September of 1874 was, to observers at the time, seen as the swan song of the natives.The Red River War was a military campaign launched by the United States Army in 1874 to displace the Comanche, Kiowa, Southern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes from the Southern Plains, and forcibly relocate the tribes to reservations in Indian Territory. The war had several army columns crisscross the Texas Panhandle in an effort to locate, harass, and capture nomadic Native American bands.
We have three relevant maps. First Nations North America celebrates North America as it was before the arrival of Europeans. Texas Wars is obviously relevant, as much of the fighting took place in Texas.
The inclusion of 4-Star Meats as the third map bears explanation. I have chosen it to represent the extermination of the bison herds. This was the true war against the Plains tribes: their entire economy and way of life was based on hunting bison. The herds on the Great Plains numbered some 10 billion. Starting in 1870, a massive campaign was waged by the Cavalry and professional bounty hunters to kill off the bison and cripple the native economy. By 1878, the bison was almost extinct. The tribes that faced the Cavalry in 1874 were for the most part undernourished and with their economy disintegrating,
