Give the original, and the cover preferably, but whatever floats your goat.
To start, something easy:
Bette Davis Eyes
Original: Jackie DeShannon (1974)
Cover: Kim Carnes (1981)

Yeah- it was one of my old ones. A lot of the links are broken now though- hence the new one. oVo was practically an encyclopedia for them. Plus now we can link youtube vids.
Good call, and Prince still is a badass, except for that batman one. I'd actually be interested to hear a cover of it if it's possible to make it good.
On the subject of Prince:
Nothing compares 2U
Original: The Family (1985)
Cover: Sinead O'Connor (1990)

If you want to post a youtube vid, click the youtube button in CC and copy/paste the string of numbers and letters at the end of the youtube url after the = sign between the sets of brackets.
I think this what you were looking for:
Original 2: The Last Time Andrew Oldham Orchestra (1965)
Itself an orchestral cover of:
Original 1: The Last Time by the Rolling Stones (1965)
Final, sort of, but not really, cover: The Verve (1997)

No problem, I bought Urban Hymns when it came out, and I had no idea that Bittersweet Symphony was related to a Stone's track till you posted.
Thank you.

Nice thread...thank you ;o)
Slam dunk IMHO...Disturbed doing Simon & Garfinkle's Sound O' Silence...as a side note, David Draiman, lead singer, was voted #42 of top 100 metal vocalists of all time....dude has a phenomenal range of abilities. Bought the song the first time I heard it...
Metallica (one of my fave bands) does a bunch of covers I like better than the original (Skynyrd Tuesday's Gone, Seeger Turn the Page...) but this has to be may fave based on my personal history.
Whiskey in the Jar ...the song cannot be pinned down to an original author as apparently it dates to the 1700's . Growing up as a kid, my folks always had on artists like the Limelighters, Kingston Trio and Irish Rovers (all of whom I have seen live, fyi ;o). I recall the Irish Rovers singing this in my earliest years. Then Thin Lizzy did it which brought it to the attention o9f the rock world, then Metallica did it. LOVE Metallica's version

NIN vs CASH
Both are great, but it's such a perfect song for Johnny Cash's voice. Plus how often do you hear old school covering new school?

I thought of another similar one, where the old guys cover newer bands:

wonderwall... oddly enough, Noel Gallagher changed the way he played it after hearing Ryan Adams version. Ryan Adams hated the song and a now deceased friend would call his answering machine drunk and sing it to him... So, when he heard she had died, he covered it on his next album... original and then RA's cover...-Jn
oasis...

Hallelujah, Leonard Cohen... Leonard said that when he heard Jeff's cover, it was what was in his head when he wrote the song. he called it the greatest song ever recorded (jeff's version, not his)... anyway, everyone does jeff's version now vs. leonard's, that is a clear sign that he surpassed the original...-Jn
Cohen...
Jeff Buckley...

I agree that Jeff's version is better, but I heard his version before Leonard's so the cover somehow was the 'original" to me... Anyway there's a full album of covers of Cohen's song here:

On the subject of Prince:
On topic:
I like Otis Redding's cover of "A Change is Gonna Come" better than Sam's. Sam's is great, he's got that silky smooth voice, but Otis just has the ultimate ability in emotive singing. Plus the horn section really adds something to it.
from another thread, just for those who didn't see it.
Dukasaur wrote:Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood written by Bennie Benjamin, Gloria Caldwell and Sol Marcus
First release, Nina Simone, 1964 If you've never heard this version before, it's worth a listen
Most famous version, Animals, 1965
The master of cover versions, Joe Cocker, 1969
Santa Esmerelda, an offbeat disco band very reminscent of Boney M, managed to make this into an unexpected hit in 1977
Moving to the opposite end of the spectrum, the metal band Place of Skulls, 2001
Eric Burdon revisits his hit and skats it up a bit, 1998
Baby you understand me now If sometimes you see I'm mad Doncha know that no one alive can always be an angel? When everything goes wrong you see some bad
Well I'm just a soul whose intentions are good Oh lord, please don't let me be misunderstood
Ya know sometimes baby I'm so carefree With a joy that's hard to hide Then sometimes it seems again that all I have is worry And then you burn to see my other side
But I'm just a soul whose intentions are good Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood
If I seem edgy I want you to know I never meant to take it out on you Life has its problems And I get more than my share But that's me one thing I never mean to do
'Cause I love you Oh baby I'm just human Don't you know I have faults like anyone?
Sometimes I find myself alone regretting Some little fooling thing Some simple thing that I've done
I'm just a soul whose intentions are good Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood
I try so hard So don't let me be misunderstood
If you think any of the covers are better than Nina Simone's version, you should reevaluate your life.

don't be lazy... links/videos... also, the RUSTY CAGE covers slays it, and that is tom petty and the heartbreakers playing backup, by the way... now go post your videos...-Jn
