Why Your Opinion about CC Really Matters (kinda)
To explain my case, the Problem of the Great CC Decline will be reiterated:
Here's where my case is made:
Why has (b) [maintain status quo of marginal modifications to the site] continued to occur?
1. It's the most profitable option. Contrary opinions on the site's future do not matter in the sense that these opinions have no instrumental value; they only have expressive value. In other words, your opinions don't change the owner's goal, which is (b). They mostly serve as a way for you to vent your frustration/praise. They may also alter the marginal modifications, which have no clear impact on stemming the Great Decline, so in reality such opinions are still expressive--not instrumental.
In this regard, your opinion does not matter; however, there's a hopeful twist:
2. The marginal modifications have largely been ineffective in affecting membership rates, but the rate of decline is still holding! How is this possible?!
It's from the expressive value of this site. The marginal modifications make you people bicker about largely pointless, superficial changes to the site. BUT, pointless bickering is much better than realizing that this site is DOOMED to DECLINE. If more people realized this, then they'd lose hope, thus becoming more likely to leave. But they don't leave, and they don't wish to realize this. They wish to indulge in the expressive value of bickering. This is how your opinion of CC matters.

I find that hard to believe, as most CCers I know who have left did so because of offline commitments, and several have returned once those commitments were satisfied.BigBallinStalin wrote:1. Membership has been falling because CC members allocate more/all their leisure time to other online games of similar enough characteristics.
In any case, while I agree with you that an improvement in the mobile version of CC would be spectacular, I believe that CC had several advantages over its competitors - such as number/variety of maps, variety of game options, tournaments, clans/tribes, etc.
From where I'm standing (having taken off my gold TeamCC shoes), CC itself is not at fault for the decline in its membership. This decline is due to factors quite beyond CC's control, and the site does not have any real power to address it.

This proves that no one should ever underestimate the power of denial!

Honestly, being a part of this sight takes a huge commitment. You have to check in daily, at least twice if you want to be diligent about not missing a turn, and once you have lots of games going, depending on game type, you really have to check multiple times a day.
Lots of people are busy with real life stuff and cant check in as frequently as they would like and decide to avoid the hassle.
If I didnt have a desk job, I probably wouldnt be on here as much as I am. That's another reason why I think a decent phone app would at least help. Do I think the phone app is going to restore us to the height of this sight? Probably not, but it will take us to the next level at least where we can see some fresh faces, and maybe a few old ones.

Classic case of attacker's advantage.
CC is like Nokia, obstinately pursuing its traditional hardware manufacturing while Samsung greases its penis and gets ready to make Finland squeal.

There are several RISK-clone apps in both Android and Apple's stores that now have million+ downloads. McGill is turning over in its grave...

Downloads or active users? Thats a big, big difference. Many download games, most dont continue playing them.

not if they pay .99 for those downloads!!! who cares if they stick around?!!-Jn
p.s.-and if you think it makes that much of a difference, maybe you should talk to the owner about updating the USERS number on the homepage... *cough*

Speaking from experience, even a million downloads doesn't mean the million have paid their $0.99.
Most users / downloads actually don't pay that fee (a very high percentage) because of hacks that end up offering the downloads for free.
I have talked to him about the homepage. But he's capable of independant thought and decisions, and doesn't always have to agree with me or others when its his website. But yes, it is a big difference between "downloads" and "users" for app's.
