When will world change football to soccer?

Post by notyou2 »

We all know how the US is the default ruler of the world.

What year will football be changed to soccer for the entire world at the insistence of Americans?

Do you hate the metric system because it's French? Or just because you're Eastern European scum?

As long as you pronounce it correctly, everything will be fine.

Or as they say when the opposing team's goal keeper kicks the ball ... Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuutboooool

Fun fact I heard on the radio last year - no one knows how long a yard is because the master yard-stick for the world was destroyed in a fire in London in 1834. The yard was reinvented from scratch in 1840 but this time three master yards were made so that they wouldn't be lost. Two were kept in London and the third was sent to the U.S. Bureau of Weights and Measures in 1855 as a back-up and is stored in a vault in Bethesda, Maryland.

My guess is 2021. By then the courts will have sentenced the disgraced FIFA rulers and the US will have seized control.

And by 2022, a mere 1 year after americans took control, we'll hear Morgan Freeman introduce a documentary about the 'good ol' footballing days'.

Yeah, but by then China will have dwarfed the US so no one will care what America says any more.

You mean minnie USA. During WWII while the Aussie men were away at war, the American GI's stationed in Oz bred with the local women and the current ruling Auusies are US descendants. They speak "merican".

The real question is when the world will change back to calling it soccer. =)

While calling the world’s most popular sport “soccer” is typically depicted as a symbol of ignorance, the reason Americans and Australians don’t call it “football” like the rest of the world is actually Britain’s fault.

The word “soccer” is a British invention that British people only stopped using about 30 years ago, according to a new paper by University of Michigan professor Stefan Szymanski.

The word “soccer” comes from the use of the term “association football” in Britain, and it goes back 200 years.

I can't believe someone actually took the time to research and write an 18-page paper on the frequency with which British people have historically used the words 'soccer' and 'football'.

I hope that academic's career isn't being funded with public money.

Never going to happen. The most important continents for the sport are latin america and europe, and in both places the sport is called 'football'(well the native variation of anyway). The US following should follow the lead of the majority.

Dude, we still use the imperial system, drive on the right side of the road (literally), and have a populace better armed than many countries. You really think we'll change the name of the 5th most popular sport (in the US) to the same as the most popular sport (in the US)?

Don't really care, it's not like americans take the sport serious anyway.

The American version of football has a serious disease it could die from (concussions). Many parents don't allow their young children to play it.

I love soccer, or football, or whatever you call it. Since my kids started playing it I've been following it and reading about it. Sports wise Its like almost anything else - its easy to recognize a big goal scorer for being good. It takes understanding to know if a defensive midfielder (or many other positions) is good.

Did not know that. But I guess it makes sense. The great thing about european football is that it's more accessible. Players of almost any body-type can play it, whether short or tall, when slim or muscular(just not fat).

For the most part you are right but not in my case: I'm at 210 pounds with 10% body fat (which is on the lean side) ...the running when I try to play ruins me. I used to be a mid-distance runner so I am fast I just have no endurance. My legs are now built for moving heavy weights not running and I sure as hell can't change directions nearly as well as I used to be able to.

The world already calls it football. That study where the British might have introduced the word soccer surprised me, but they righted their wrong a while ago, so I'm including the English when I say:

Every football-loving country in the world calls the sport football. Meaning, in their language they use the word "foot" and "ball" and combine it. This seems like the logical name to call it, because the sport is played with a ball and is directed mainly at the feet. For instance, in Dutch we call it "voetbal". You can guess what it means literally.

I understand why this thread is made, so I won't surpass it. The Americans (and apparently the Aussies too, I didn't know that) call it soccer.
These countries calling it soccer is the same as Europeans calling American Football "handegg". It's not the point that it makes more sense if you analyze the essence of the sport (throwing an egg-shaped rubber thing with your hands). The point is that we call it handegg, because we think American Football is a weird sport. Also, we are no good at it at all, which is an important factor.

When the USA (and Australia, I guess) become better at football and they come close to having a shot at a title worth mentioning, perhaps they will start calling the sport what it really is: football.

Until then, I can only be glad that at least the American women are relatively good. Too bad football-minded tv programmes focus mainly on men, so this is unnoticed by many. I'm sure those women call their sport football.

Not sure about the Netherlands, but there have been American Football players to come here from Europe (also the various Polynesian islands throughout the Pacific Ocean contribute their fair share of players too). Hell, this last NFL draft, the University of Wyoming had a player from Germany get drafted. And as I understand it, there is at least a German league of sorts. Canada too contributes to American Football, and they even have their own version of pro-football too (a few slight differences, the biggest of which is they have 12 players on the field instead of 11).

Another point, the Mountain West Conference and Pacific 12 Conference (2 collegiate athletic conferences) are planning a Bowl game in Australia in a couple years. Not sure how that will work out, though Notre Dame and the military academies have had games in Ireland before that did pretty well.
