Rubbish!!!
Why limit yourself. Every colour has a place in the palate. To say that you are not going to use a certain colour is the same as not using a certain brush or tool you have. Why would you want to limit yourself?

Conquer 4, Lunar war, AYBABTU and Space all use black and it works for them.

EDIT: ManB, going to move this to discussions as this is all going to be subjective and a healthy discussion would be better held there.

No, they use varying very dark shades.

Apples and oranges my friend. If it looks like a banana, feels like a banana and taste likes a banana, it is a banana. So if it looks black, it is black. At what point do you call a dark red black, a yellow orange, green turns to blue, but when?

When you consider we only have 12 colours (primary, secondary and tertiary) to play with, you get all the tones, shades and tints by adding grey, black and white to these 12, again, I ask, why would you want to limit yourself? It really is saying that black is bad. Are you saying black is bad? What do you have against black?

What colour is this then?

Ah, without examining this in software, i can see about 6 different shades in there.
tophalf looks black but entirely isn't...
bottom half has about four shades in it!

I have nothing against black as it gives good contrast behind other colours on similar colours, and of course comes in very useful in its own right.
....i really think this is simply a firfy discussion....sorry MB. :(
but i won't be following any lead this discussion might create.
Let's get back to something useful like map commenting and getting these projects finished we've created.
