Re: Honesty
Everyone lies, and anyone who says otherwise is...lying. If you are honest in all circumstances, there is no question that you are reviled.
That being said, I absolutely believe that a person's word is their bond.

Re: Honesty
What's the point in telling the truth when you have more to gain from lying?

It's not about what you gain, but about what you keep. I'll keep my integrity, thank you.

even from a purely selfish perspective problem is you're assuming perfect knowledge.
There's usually a risk involved.

I can rephrase and ask 'what's the point in keeping your integrity when there's more to gain from shedding it?' if you like.
Haggis, I'm afraid I don't entirely follow you. What is your statement about perfect knowledge?

Re: Honesty
I'll lie whenever I want/need to. Seriously enough, my philsophy behind doing so is from Waterboy: "what momma don't know won't hurt her."

I only lie whenever I know or have very strong belief that I can get away with it.

I'm really good at lying. It's how I convinced Victor Sullivan to let me manage his finances. In other news, a study shows a correlation between good liars among men and how often those men get put into leadership roles. I'll try to find it l8r.

At work I like to people all the time.. I am trying to get money from people to use for a worthy political campaign... If I like to the uninformed laymen I really think "Eh.. f*ck 'em. Their money is being better spent here than what they would have done with it this month anyway."
I usually talk the normal person out of $15 dollars a month for a year to fight the Pacific Garbage Patch... That there is a lie.. I am actually using their money to create awareness for the Pacific Garbage Patch.. So we can stop its growth.. As we are figuring out how to clean it.

Re: Honesty
I sometimes lie by ommission and I'll tell white lies. My view on lying is one of getting caught. If there is a risk that I'll get caught if I lie, I don't lie. I try to take a longer term view of things.

Re: Honesty
Lying can be relaxing and healthy at times. It depends on the quality of the surface and one's positioning.
Re: Honesty
It is so much easier to neither lie nor tell the truth. Imagine this:
Wife: Have you slept with another woman?
Me: You have nothing to worry about.
Wife infers that I have been loyal and goes about her day happy. I have not technically lied.
If everyone did this then it would be hands around the world and everyone still gets to go to Heaven once we reach full time.

Re: Honesty
Honnesty is one of the values that if 50% of the world had it, it would be a great world,
But we imitate prestige, and we realized long ago that those with "prestige" were not honest at all, so it follows that we must be dishonest.

nietzsche wrote:[...] that we must be dishonest.
There's no logical reason that "we must" be dishonest.
Honesty is the best policy.
What was the question again?

It's only reason that dictates that we must be honest, but reason is only secondary when we take those decisions.
A father, when his trying to teach values to his children (everyday), if he has in the back of the mind all the time that dishonest people get rich and honest fellows end up poor, do you think he'll specifically teach honesty to them? He naturally wants that they don't suffer, that they have plenty to eat...
This is what has happened to Mexico with the last two generations, parents suffering poverty chose to teach them love for the drug culture, they didn't find a reason to do otherwise, it was clear people with money were doing that, either politicians, drug lords, and the remnants of old burguesy.

Don't lie to me. Mexico doesn't love the drug culture
or the violence and corruption associated with it.
There are criminal elements in all cultures that are not
condoned or followed by others.

You are mistaken in the first paragraph.
How can I explain it...
1. Drug lords and drug pushers they all came from poverty, they rose quite quickly so they never become sophisticated or anything, they like the same shitty music, they like shitty beer, they like shitty cars priced high, the only thing they had good taste on is in women's bodies. So poor people relate to them, they see them as semi gods, who against all odds took all they wanted from this life.
2. Music: ranchero music "evolved" to become only stories about capos and their life style, mentioning power of the guns and how they have the cops in their pocket and all that shit. Music to which poor people relates.
3. Money, they buy everyone, and they give parties and gifts and churches for little communities, they are closer to the people than the government, who only takes from them.
And much more points.
Only lately that violence has escalated we have started to see more public dislike from the middle class, in the past the drug business was seen as a good thing because it brought a looooot of money to a community, in the form of jobs and lot of buying power in local commerce.

In other news GOOD FUCKING LORD THAT HONESTY SONG BY THAT POPPY POS BAND IS TERRIBLE!
I go to the gym to justify my mockery of fat people.
Re: Honesty
Criminality and dishonesty are two different things.
Both, however, refer to the breaking of moral codes that have gathered just as many cobwebs as the idea of 'tradition'. Legality, honesty and tradition are for old people who are too tired to run the race any more.

There may be greater gain short-term, but rarely is there greater gain long-term because you lose the trust and faith of others, which means you will lose future opportunities for further gain.

I don't believe you've ever been married.
(And I would absolutely consider that a lie...a "lie of omission" is still a lie.)

Re: Honesty
It's hypothetical. You are correct that I have never been married
If I was forced to choose in that situation I would lie rather than telling her what I'd been up to. People take that sort of thing very badly and I'd only be disrupting societal harmony and causing my wife mental anguish.

You're thinking too short-term. Marriage is a long-term proposition (hopefully) and so you must think long-term. Is her immediate mental anguish and the accompanying societal harmony disruption going to be less now or when she eventually finds out and loses all trust in you?
