Russia: "We are preparing for preemptive attack on Europe"
The Russian Federation yesterday announced it will engage and destroy NATO forces in Poland and Romania if Obama's new missile defense system comes online.

Re: Russia: "We are preparing for preemptive attack on Europ
Looks like the new Sick Man of Europe is back.
I like how McCain called Putin paranoid, and that the USG keeps repeating that they'd never ever ever use this missile defense system against Russia. The US has a strong incentive to cheat (i.e. lie) because what's to stop the USG if they reach a point of being able to effectively prevent a Russian nuclear attack?
And, why would it be reasonable for the Russian government to allow the US to eventually prevent Russia from retaliating against any aggressor with its nuclear weapons?

A member of a think tank was quoted as saying "Maybe he was drunk," in reference to the Russian who said that.

Capt. Tenille: Simpson, as you have experience in a nuclear power plant, you can serve on a submarine.
Homer: It's pronounced 'nucular'. Nucular.

Seriously? They have the second strongest airforce in the world. This would be well within their capabilities .

I'd go for the "he was drunk" theory.
I even suspect he's a cc member.

Granted I don't think it will happen, but Russia could certainly launch a strike. The repercussions would be massive but they could do it.

Why would they resort to military action when they can just bully around soft ass leaders...

I'd be angry myself, and if I had the power I'd stop it. What NATO is doing with those bases qualifies as bullying.
I read the news last night, and thought to myself that I didn't know Russia was strong enough to come with this message, but I'm unsure if it's that they are sending a message to the US or to the allies or to the general public.
But that's the way the world works, in Mexico there are armed US agents moving freely around, because we can't defend ourselves and we'd rather be bullied by them than having them as enemies.

I bet that was what shakashvili thought too. I don't really think Russia will launch such a strike, but they could. Its within their capabilities to do so.

Yeah, kicking the snot out of Georgia is one thing, taking on NATO is quite another.
SU-25, meet F-22.
Most of Russia's air force is crap, and even if they have a few planes that actually work, their pilots log 30 hours of flight time a year.

Maybe the Russians have gotten better, but not by much I'd wager. Kicking the crap out of tin pots they can do a decent job at. Going against a tough and well trained force, not so much.
The Russians would get slapped down bad, the footage of the beatdown would end up on WWF Smackdown! on pay per view.
The russian threats are insanely funny. Russians are generally practical, not stupid. They'll piss and moan but nothing else. There is nothing else they can do. Well, except, sit back and watch Europe (and the US) bankrupt itself. Now that's some funny shit. Russia doesn't have to strike the defense shield, they just have to sit back and watch us bankrupt ourselves into oblivion. It's much cheaper and far more efficient that way for Russia.

Russian Chief of the General Staff and First Deputy Defense Minister Army-General Nikolai Makarov talking about Soviet bombing capabilities wrote:They can run bombing missions only in daytime with the sun shining, but they miss their targets anyway

Re: Russia: "We are preparing for preemptive attack on Europ
Patches, you do realize that much of the US navy, army, special forces, and air force is dealing with Afghanistan, Iraq, and Iran at the moment, right? It wouldn't be a war between the US v. Russia. At first, it would be Russia crashing through Belarus and Poland and also Romania. Then, it's US v. Russia, with the obvious choice coming down to nuclear retaliation.
The Russians are without a doubt physically capable of carrying out their threats.
So, you have to ask yourself: is the Russian threat credible? Are the Russians that willing to defend their future power from a US national missile defense (NMD) system, which would certainly diminish Russia's future nuclear strike capabilities? I say, yes, of course. They'd be stupid not to, and they've been B&M'ing about the expanding NMD for at least ten years. I'd say they're definitely serious, and they got the US with its pants around its ankles.
This is a great opportunity for Russia to flex its muscles and make some credible threats. (This was also why the defense realists within the USG were against the war in Iraq. The US is too spread out, thus inviting other states to take advantage of the opportunity).

Re: Russia: "We are preparing for preemptive attack on Europ
BBS, Belarus would not fight Russia if anything they would join in. So all the Russians would have to do is hit the Missile defense basses in Poland and Romania . Which wouldn't absolutely have to come from air strikes. The Russians could land paratroopers to destroy the bases with quick in and out missions .

The Russians would never do that.
Poland and Romania are members of the EU.
Even though our military strength doesn't compare to that of the US, France and UK have the bomb and trained, experienced armies.
This "threat" was probably made just before an election.

Oh, I know, but I was imaging that the Russians would move ground forces through Belarus in order to prepare for some counter-attack from Poland (or NATO). Poor choice of words on my part.

Ehhh a good thinning of the herd is just what The Earth needs at this point. But don't just nuke Europe, any city over 500,000 anywhere on the plant should be culled. Once the nuclear winter is over life will begin anew.

The Russians would be in and out of Poland before the French could make it to the Rhine.
Also, this assumes the French armed forces don't decide to go on strike over pension reform once they're ordered to counter-attack.

Don't be silly all of you. A new war involving Russia and NATO cannot happen.
Everyone is a pussy. They know the implications. Unless we have a Russian Gabrilo Princip killing say Obama a war won't happen. The US only picks on little countries, wars they can win easily.

LMFAO Wait do the French even bother with the pretense of having a so called army nowadays? From what I understood I thought they just flew white flags from all of their former military bases these days in order to beat the rush.

Who will the newly reorganized Obama endorsed Middle Eastern "spring" countries support?
Or will they be too busy observing the green light to hit Israel...
