LOL
I am just an ugly American, and I tell you what... no one here really knows that Wales exists. I am being honest here. England and UK are used interchangeably here. We know that Ireland is different then england because we celebrate St. Patrick's day and about 20% of Americans are of Irish decent. I think the only reason that we know that Scotland is different is because of Scottie in Star Trek. Wales and the Welsh people have never made a giant impact on American culture. I am a fairly intelligent (ignoring my previous comment) person and I cannot think of any welsh people on the top of my head. well... isn't Cathrine Zeta-Jones a Welshman?
All I have to say is that you won't get any where by calling the English rubbish. (Is that a word you would say in polite company in England... there you go, I just minimized the entire British Islands into just England again)

America wins! We decide who is important and who isn't.
Welsh: not important
Chuck Norris: important
Sorry!

Megarman1, I don't want to burst your patriotic bubble too hard, but perhaps you should spend some time with the history books before trying to chat about history? Seriously, in the most polite way possible the 'Glorious revolution', or 'Bloodless revolution' could be a good place to start with your Irish history? You might even go so far as to substantiate your claims about winning wars with foreign assistance with actual examples?
Who knows, perhaps you could even consider the idea that nations are made 'great' because of reasons other than war?
I'm sure Wales is cool and all, but I think you might be best doing a bit more research on your homeland (and your argument in general) before setting out to take on the world with your anti-English stance...
Best of luck.

this is pretty funny
I'm Dutch, but living in America has provided me with some useful insight.
nmhunate is right of course. Americans are ignorant. thats how it is. As for England being overated, I don't think they are comletely, not as much as the US anyways. No one knows about the welsh, this is true, except that theres a Prince of Wales in England, and that thier flag is pretty cool.
We know scotish because, BraveHeart, hello.
And Ireland, every one knows about that, from the IRA to drinking all day, they are pretty hard to miss.
I really stand nuetrally on the issue, but I feel that my opinion in itself is a rather decent one.

I know Wales, cause I read a book about Robin Hood set in Wales: the author researched Robin hood and thought that he might have been Anglicized, but was actually Welsh. Also it had heaps of information about Wales.
The reason it took England nearly 300 years was because Wales had the longbow, which was very dangerous at the time, and because they used their abundant forest to fight a guerrilla war. But apart from that I don't know much about Wales. It just kinda gets overshadowed.

And THAT is something to be proud of.

Hmm... that name is 1 letter longer than the longest place name in Aotearoa:
"Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauatamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu"
Fancy that lol.

English influence
I'm American, and although I obviously think my own country is the best in the world, it still bothers me the way we have "dumbed-down" the English language. I think I disagree almost every time a Brit posts on this site about something political, but at least they insist on using the correct form of verbs and make the language as colorful as possible. I think American English has been taken over by the stupid hip hop artists and rappers. Anyone who attempts to speak proper English over here is ridiculed.
Whenever I watch something on TV about the Welsh, Irish, or Scottish I am intrigued by it. Is there still a lot of lingering resentment over English rule? I admit I'm not proficient in English history.

Ok, I am Irish, but dont harbour any grudges or negativity towards England or its people. History is history.
I dont think it is overrated as a country, it plays a vital economic and political role in Europe.
I have been there on a number of occasions and enjoyed it. I have also studied, worked and partied with english people and found the vast majority to be great.
The only caveat I have is sport in England.
I find the english media overrate its football and rugby national teams and leagues and also its cricket team ( though I am not very knowledgable about cricket). This tends to lead to great expectations and then vicious media attacks when these inflated expectations are not reached.
Thats all.

Shutcho mouf o I pop a cap in yo ass!
I'm an American born and raised in the Detroit area, and I'm English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh (also slightly French, 1/4 Hungarian, 1/4 Serbian). So yes, I've heard of Wales. No, I don't think England is overrated.

If Englands so rubbish, why do we have to spend billions subsidising the Welsh, Scottish and Northern Ireland because your so lame you can't reate a decent economy If you're so great why don't you support yourselves.
Face it, the Welsh and the Scots are the underclass of Great Britian, not even fit to clean our boots.

exactly! i moved to asia a while back but am originally from england, and am totally fed up with all the moaning crap that eminates from english boarders.
what the hell have the welsh done recently? and cutting scotland off would save an insane amount of money on the NHS what with the scary levels of heart attacks there (it may have something to do with irn-bru plus battered mars bars, damn fatties)
i think most english would happily cut the slack and let wales and scotland fend for themselves.
ireland on the other hand im a fan of them, not only are they less arsey and whiney but they gave us St Patricks day

both qualified arguments obviously. with the amount of knowledge and research shown in your statements i can only assume that you are both PhD graduates with some amazing proficiency in historical fact and unsurpassed eloquence with the written word. you should both be proud.
i love wales. it is great. my avatar is used as the welsh flag(without my permission, but i don't mind) and we are the best in the world at speaking welsh.
i know lots of welsh people. some of them don't like the english. big deal.
get over it.
we beat them at rugby this year.

So are you trying to say that Wales has a self sufficient economy and revenue generated from English tax payers and business is not used to subsidise you scrounging sheep shaggers?
You are obviously very patriotic about your country, and you have every right to be so, although I'm not sure what the Welsh have to be prond of. The sooner England gets devolution the better and you can go back to the dark ages where you belong.
