-- NO TROLLING TO SEE HERE -- GENUINE QUESTION --
Is Romney's faith going to get in the way when it comes to election time? Assuming he wins the nomination that is. Is mormonism mainstream enough? How do other christian groups see it?

I think there will be some small number of people who don't vote for him because he's Mormon. I don't think it will be pervasive. Given that he's poised to win the Republican nomination, it appears that Republicans, at least, are prepared to vote for a Mormon. I don't think Mitt Romney or Republicans generally are concerned as to whether Democrats vote for him, as Democrats are likely to vote for Obama even if Mitt Romney wasn't Mormon.
So the question is whether Mitt Romney's religion will be a turn off to the middle-of-the-road folks. I suspect the answer is no. I also suspect that his religion will not get too much airtime (no one wants to be accused of bigotry, especially campaign strategists for the president), but who knows?

I think a mormon could become president someday, yes. For the longest time, people asked could a catholic become president, and it eventually happened.
Maybe a more interesting question is could someone who professes no faith become president? That I am less sure will happen.

Yeah, I was going to bring up Kennedy. I think the 2 situations are pretty analogous. In the end, people will vote for the one who they think agrees more with their opinions on policy.

Thinking about my earlier point, in what order, in terms of most likely to happen, do you think the following will occur. Hm...
Random order:
- Someone who professes no faith becoming president
- Someone who professes Mormonism as their faith becoming president
- Someone who professes Judaism as their faith becoming president
- Someone who professes Islam as their faith becoming president
- A woman becoming president
- A person who identifies as a Hispanic becoming president
Hm...

Would a Mormon be more likely or less likely to fund NASA well? You know, because of their space religion and stuff.

I'm pretty ignorant in terms of politics, but I'd rather have a President who has no faith or is an Agnostic, then to have someone who's just a giant bible thumper. Just my opinion.

Absolutely not. There is no way a moron could become president.

I think the 2012 election will be more about voting against Obama.

If you had to sit down with any President of the United States, and try to convince others that you were less of a moron than he....youd be begging alright. In reality, we all would.
Eh...I forgot about Ford though.

wait, this question is about convincing OTHERS that you're not a moron?
because politicians are good at persuasion.

Perception is reality.

I hate it when I come into a thread to make a joke (albeit a generic one) and 8 other people have already made it.
Anyway, if an African born black Muslim with a name Like Barack Hussein Obama can become president, I'm sure a mormom has every chance.

Well, in this case, I think you were more saved from making a dumb joke...but....someone had to do it.

I'd pick the atheist as being least likely to happen. A lot of mudslinging in presidential politics has to do with perceived character flaws, so a religious background probably assures many people that the candidate does have a certain morality. Not to say that atheists aren't good upstanding ethical people, but the opponent will probably attack the lack of religious institutional upbringing.

Well, Obama is the antichrist, which suggests some level of faith, and that was always a lot more likely than having an atheist in charge.

Can a Orman become President?
Yes.
Will Romney?
I don't think so.
I think the Religious Right will not turn out in the numbers necessary to elect him.

I wonder if the pressures and stresses of the US presidency could drive one to Mormonism?
