Every time I check the current projection, it's weaker, and further west than the previous time. By the time this bitch hits my latitude, it'll be nothing but butterfly kisses in Japan.

I'm pretty sure the Weather Channel is just blowing this out of proportion so that people will watch it.

Been through a "few" storms myself. Take care. I did not start a link because I figured most people in the landing zone were busy getting ready.

The Outer Banks of North Carolina is not a good place to be in a hurricane.
Nagshead has a bit of high ground I suppose, but I wouldn't want to be
hanging out anywhere south of that point when it hits.

If Irene actually hits there it will be interesting to see if Oregon Inlet
remains open.

Stay safe... high & dry.

Not to worry AoG... Irene is only 800 miles wide with 100+ mph winds
across an area 80 miles wide wrapping the eye.

Pretty sure that happens with everything in the news. Especially if it's happening on the east coast.

Hope you've got your gear gathered up! I've been through a few hurricanes on the Gulf coast, it can get interesting! Got plenty of fuel for your generator? How much storm surge are calling for where you are?

If it goes out, they're saying it'll be out for a week.

It's going to be a much weaker storm at that point. I'm talking about the NYC and the surrounding area.

Hopefully she will veer offshore and ya'll won't get hit too hard. Good luck to all of you who do find yourselves in the path of the storm. And may I suggest you get a battery powered fan? The heat and humidity after a hurricane can be real nasty!

My family and I got hit by tropical storm or a weak hurricane when we were camping at Cape Hatteras, in a pop-up camper. I was like 7 or 8 at the time and thought it was very fun and exciting. Looking back my parents must have been shitting bricks. I remember the trailer going from side to side a lot, and my father and oldest brother running around outside trying to secure stuff. At one point I ran outside myself, the sand blowing around felt like getting attacked by an entire beehive.

BTW any chance we can get this storm to spare NYC but still wash the Yankees out to sea?

As borderdawg noted, its not the winds you have to worry about with this one, its the surge. I am hearing estimates of 12 foot surges. I am sure your estimates are better, but don't ignore them!

Its almost always the storm surge that kills people, not the winds.

It's seems the government and the media are making Hurricane Irene their poster child for the forcing of people out of their homes. So far it's mostly been ridicule, but as of right now I have heard the media as well as the president calling people who don't evacuate cowboys, dummies, idiots, etc.

For people who want to stay behind, it's called protecting your property. It's also called Freedom.

Gang, I'm lifting my self-imposed ban temporarily so I can provide live SAX TEAM coverage of Hurricane Irene.

Esmerelda and I just arrived in the city from Santa Barbara in my Russian surplus BTR-80 armored personnel carrier and will be providing live updates here in The Club throughout the storm.

Well boys and girls. Its hitting us as I speak but from what I see and what the news sees are 2 diff things. yes its blowing its ass off and raining but power being out hasnt been that bad and not alot of flooding here. i think the up state people will get a good rain storm nothing more. but i cant say for sure. It was built up so much in the media as, oh shit you better run and hide, when all you had to do is sit in ur easy chair and watch the news with a cold beer..lol. It is better to be safe then sorry, but i will say i have been through way worse hurricanes then this one. This is like a little kitten compared to others. Come on now I still have internet for cring out loud.lol.

I'm torn on this, Scott. I used to agree with this position after I read my second FAV English novel R.A. Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress which deals with this very topic when the U.S. retaliates against the Moon and the Moon government is faced with a decision as to whether to order mandatory evacuation of portions of Luna City.

However, on the other hand, when mandatory evacuations are ordered in areas where the police are planning to abandon, the absence of an evacuation order would constitute the de facto surrender of the state's monopoly on violence in the area in question which is an intrinsic function of the state even in the libertarian worldview.

Anywho, I'm gonna quick make love to Esmerelda and then we're heading out in the BTR to prepare another Team Sax report on Hurricane Irene.
