Evolved out of the 90s hardcore scene. Based on breakbeats (typically the Amen break) at speeds of around 170-180bmp, with heavy bass being another prime feature.

DnB you may have heard in the mass media includes the 'jungle is wicked' song in Ali G, pretty much any car advert... A lot of people have heard 'It's the way.... that we bring this sound...' by Marky and XRS...

Alternative is a very wide label. You could pretty much take your pick of half the genres up there and in some record shops they'll be described as 'alternative'.
