I was nerding out on usgs.gov and saw the quake. I thought it was too far offshore. I've been following a series of earthquakes in the same location. They continue to get hit with massive aftershocks: 7.1, 6.8, 6.5, 6.5, more tsunamis. Tsunami to hit Hawaii at 2:59am...

The video of the tsunamis is insane.
Thoughts and prayers for our Japanese members.

Wow. I hope Japan can limit the deaths and property destruction, but I'm not sure how (especially after seeing those videos).

The most appropriate phrasing I have heard is that Japan is as prepared as it is
possible for any nation to be prepared. Its that "as possible" bit that gets worrisome.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-t5qe_VSEAAt about :42 you can see a white car burning rubber in reverse, then it tries to turn around and go forward. I wonder if the camera panned away to avoid showing their fate...

You know I really don't know what to say here. Obviously this sucks massively. It's seems like Earth Quakes and Tsunami's are becoming a lot more frequent all around the world and especially the Pacific.

Thoughts go out to the Japanese people affected...
I know Japan had sent quite a lot of 'earthquake experts' to New Zealand after the Christchurch earthquake the other week. If they were still in New Zealand I dare say they would be heading straight back home now.
Only a slightly different note, does anyone else think that youtube should actually just remove the comment options on videos? Some of the crap that has been posted in relation to the earthquake videos is disgusting -

I did a little google earth searching and found some of the locations shown in the videos and most of what you see is already about one mile or more inland. Some large housing tracts were anihalated before you see the wave going through the farmland. It's hard to believe the death toll won't be fucking huge when you still see all those people in cars that close to the sea - some even heading toward the coast more than two hours after the quake.
Knowing what I saw after the Thailand quake, I woulda already had a six pack down and the coals ready on a nearby mountain top.

I was actually just wondering about an update on that power plant. That's the last thing they need at this point. From what I've heard, it'd be a full melt-down.
The Oregon coast is under warning right now, too. I live about 50 miles inland, so no worries, but I met a few people today at work who lived on the coast and they weren't even allowed to drive back home. The harbor in Crescent City, a port town, has pretty much been demolished, along with some boats. I don't think any deaths have occurred, though.
Scary stuff.
