Clan League: Season 3 - Info, Q&A

Post by jpcloet »

______________________________________________________________________________

Welcome to the Clan League: Season 3 (2010-2011). After 2 successful Seasons (Season 1 Winners: THOTA, Season 2 Winners: Legends of War), the CD's have decided to continue on with a format similar to Season 2, but with a few less clans overall given the staying power of some in Division 2 last year.

______________________________________________________________________________
Final Standings
*note - For Clan League 3, there are four groups (A-D); these groups are seeded with the top 2 from each group advancing to a quarterfinal spot in the playoff bracket. So, there is just one division and one winner for Clan League 3.

Group A
TOFU - 67
LOW - 53
ID - 49
LEG/OLE - 44
BSS - 30
TIME - 27

Group B
EMP - 66
MYTH - 48
DB - 47
MM - 37
BPB - 36
AOD - 36

Group C
IA - 65
AOC - 61
FOED - 49
DYN - 39
NEM - 34
SOW - 22

Group D
KORT/S&M - 63
TSM - 56
G1 - 40
L4D - 39
GR - 37
TLW - 35

Quarter-Finals
AOC (11) vs EMP (8)
IA (13) vs MYTH (6)
KORT/S&M (12) vs LOW (7)
TSM (10) vs TOFU (9)

Semi-Finals
IA (10) vs TSM (9)
A0C (12) vs KORT/S&M (7)

Finals
IA (10) vs AOC (9)
----

Setup
  1. Participants must be CLA eligible (do not have to be a current CLA member clan), meaning they have completed at least one 20+ challenge and adhere to the 1 competitive clan rule. Clans that meet the 1 clan rule, but may not have completed a 20+ challenge can be added upon the discretion of the Clan Directors
  2. There will be 4 Divisions being 4 Premier Divisions (either 5 or 6 Clan per depending on signups, all subsequent analysis in the post will assume 6), There will be no Secondary Division this year.

3. Clans will be placed in the Season 3 league based on performance in Season 2 regular season, and a defined play in process will be outlined upon signups for the remaining spots
  4.
The top 6 clans in both Div1A and Div1B plus the 4 clans (1 disbanded) that were to be promoted from Div2A and Div2B from Season 2

    Immortal Assassins
    Knights of the Round Table
    THOTA
    EMPIRE
    Imperial Dragoons
    Left4Dead
    Legends of War
    Bullet Proof Bandits
    The Spanking Monkeys
    Nemesis
    Angels of Death
    Generation 1: The Clan
    The Odd Fellows Union
    Divine Domination
    Agents Of Chaos
    Legends of the Zone
5. Each clan will play their other 5 division mates 9 games home & away for 90 total games (9 games * 2 home/away) * 5 clans
  6. Each team has 5 play weeks (generally every-other week), and each week will be both home and away for a full 18 game set for the 2 clans battling
  7. All maps and games are equally weighted at 1.00 for all league results.
  8. The top 2 Clans in each division will be sent to the bracket playoffs
  9. Playoffs and relegation will be a 8Q-7T-4D with each side choosing 4Q-3T-2D as described below as the regular season format. The additional triples map will be Random-Esc-Chained-Sunny.
  10. The top 4 clans in each Division will be automatically eligible for Season 4.
  11. Schedule is slated for the Season to run from September 18th for the play in clans, and the main component from about Oct 19, 2010 with playoffs estimated to end early March 2011. Hopefully this helps with those clans still competing in the CCup
______________________________________________________________________________

Challenge Settings
  • 4 Quadruples - Clan's Choice of Settings
  • 3 Triples - Clan's Choice of Settings
  • 2 Doubles - Clan's Choice of Settings
That means there are now 29 spots to fill, rather than 22. However, there are also less overall games.
  1. No Manual, No Nuclear,No Freestyle, No Speed, No Beta Maps.
  2. Given that a clan will only be making 45 home games and that there are over 150 maps available, plus considering some element of home advantage, no map can be chosen more than twice during the regular season and in addition, no repeats in your 9 home sets. Maps can be chosen for a 3rd time in the playoffs, but then not again.
  3. Random maps are allowed to be used as much as the home team chooses.
  4. Does not have to be fixed teams. Players can play in more than 1 home game and more than 1 away game.
  5. NEW RULE - In each challenge week of 18 games, a minimum of 10 players must be used, and one player cannot play more than 6 games. FYI, in general for medal and All-Star consideration, the average player will need to play in 3 games of the 18 games, but depends on how many players you play from your clan. The CD suggestion is that you have at least 20-25 players across the entire season.

______________________________________________________________________________

Execution
  • Season 3 will be run with game creation rights and will be given to 1 person in each clan.
  • The primary contacts are asked to make games a few days before the start of their play week, post the game numbers only in the "order" threads, and then notify jpcloet, masli that the games have been made.
  • The league contact is responsible for tracking their home maps, however, since this is now up front it should be much easier. If you create a repeat map, it will be a default win.
  • The league contacts (and clan teammates) are all responsible for making sure their clan fills games. Home clans are asked to fill the games within 3 days and Away clans are asked to join within 4 days once the home team has joined first. This should be easier given you will know in advanced which games are coming your way. Ideally by the Sunday night, most games for that week should be filled.
  • Clans will default the game if they put too many players into any game.
______________________________________________________________________________

Clan Action Required
Each Clan Needs to Post the Following
  • Clan Name
  • Primary Contact
  • Secondary Contact
Each Clan clan will be asked to provide their home maps once the final schedule is posted.
______________________________________________________________________________

The Clan All-Star Teams
Using the Tournament Stats script, the Clan Directors will be naming a First Team (Doubles-Triples-Quads plus 2 reserves) 11 Player All-Star team along with the Top Player Award.

______________________________________________________________________________

Other Notes
The league results will be added to the appropriate ladder
Season 4 considerations - Expansion to 4 Groups of 6, if Season 3 plays out with 4 Groups of 5.
Any deemed abuse should be brought to the attention of the Clan Directors

Kort will debate it out, though the start date is likely to soon for us. Overlapping for us is rather a pain. Some is OK, but pulling double duty till X mas is ugh maybe too much. Anyhow we will debate it out.

Rule Update Coming: In using last Season's post, I have missed 2 site updates. Nuclear Spoils and Manual deployment. In checking with the CLA topics, it appears that most clans are against both in the Season. I will discuss with Masli about inclusion, and the option of limited use if included.

A few questions JP.

[*]The primary contacts are asked to order games prior to the season using a standard format, hopefully aided with an Excel Order Form for those that would like some tools to help with this. Orders are not final, however you can change 1 game per challenge week but must be done at least 10 days prior to when the games are to be created for that week. We have decided in consultation with a few TD's that giving privileges to 20+ people does not makes sense, although my main concern is how Season 1 went where I had to chase down clans to not only make the games but deliver them on time.

Does this mean you need to choose your maps and settings before the season starts for every match up? A lot can change over the course of a season and this seems to remove a lot of tactical choices.

Also, how are the divisions decided? Will there be seeding and if so how will that seeding be done? Sorry if you mentioned this but I couldn't see it anywhere.

Yes, you choose the maps and settings before. Partly due to allowing swift execution of game creation plus it will allow clans to better plan how they fill away games. Some clans took too long last year and this should help to get games filled faster. You have to send them in after I post the schedule so you will know who you are facing. Allowing 1 game to change gives you some flexibility.

The divisions are drafted based on the final regular season standings from Season 2. As and Example A1 would be matched with B4, A2 with B3 etc. It is basically a snake draft with some mixing of A and B so that the same clans don't keep playing each other every season. The spots to be filled will have to based on something else. If a clan from Season 2 auto group decides not to join, Masli and I will have to discuss the most fair way of allocating the slots.

Not only are there now 29 spots (way too weighted on quads) per battle, but you have to turn in all your settings at the beginning of the season?? That's insane. Things change in your clan, and you can't expect everything to be mapped out months in advance when.

This is extremely annoying. I don't know how you plan your games, but for us, it's a week-by-week thing, accounting for how we're doing, who's around, etc. Things one change per week won't fix.

Also, the overlap is going to be tough. We'll see.

The majority of the games start between Oct 15th to about Dec 21st. Hopefully things don't change that much over 3 months in your clan.

Not to worry, nothing will change around Christmas and New Year's. I'm sure nobody will have holiday plans or something unexpected will come up.

its still a lot of strain on the leaders of each clan to get all the games together in 2 weeks

Sounds like people would rather have more flexibility. The game creators need more time so how about we do 2 weeks and penalty being random like Season 2?
