sweet map. wonder how much things have changed over the last 10 years.

I do have a problem with what my state looks like though. We are not 98% German!?!

The Norwegian populace involved a lot more locations than those shown.
South Dakota actually has a decent population. It was that way for A LONG time, so I don't know why that isn't reflected here.
Not to mention, we're spread out in Minnesota... not just in the north west....

Yes I meant to say the same about Minnesota. Was the first point I had except I just didn't want to get into it too much. I know I live in the city and things are uber-diverse, but in the suburbs minorities segregate themselves to certain zipcodes. Inthe country, Norwegians are severely under-represented in Minnesota (in this map anyways). I also took a Minnesota Geography course, and I do not remember the exact numbers, I just know this map is misleading slightly, or at least in the OP's Title. I am not saying it a "fake" or incorrect, but the it does not get down the the nut-meat of reality. We are just sucking salted shells.

I live in Illinois now, but all of my family is in Minnesota. Some came from South Dakota and many, if not most were just in Minnesota.

Edit: There are also large amounts of Germans and Italians [Triple Edit:] and Poles in Illinois. (I guess mostly in the Chicago area, but still...)

Its about ancestry not about first or second generation immigrants. At least that's what I think.

I used to think the ancestry of most Americans was English.

After you've been in a place long enough it eventually stops making sense to go all the way back to your European ancestors. there is a similar thing in Canada where people put Canadian as there ancestry, basicly it means they don't really know or their family has been in the country for many generations.

I've long known the Boston area had the highest percentage of Irish Immigrants in the country.

This is an interesting Map... but it lacks a lot as well. Ethnicity, societal culture, language, change in population over short periods of time... these factors are more useful in understanding society and interpretting or inferring positive or negative consequences of such.

It actually makes sense that it isnt. England was probably one of the better countries to live in at the times of most of the immigrations from various countries. The biggest influxes have usually come in the biggest times of crisis in the home country, or in some cases booming growth here Ex: gold rush, railroads, dotcom, etc.

Well the one area I know is Oregon....and the big white spot in the center = "other"?? THAT is BS....it is roughly 1/3 european / whatever mixed white ancestry, 1/3 mexican and 1/3 Native American. Other.....lol. And it looks like German is the catch-all for people that didnt answer? I cant hardly believe the majority of the country is german ancestry.....

This map does do a good job of showing how much of it's own thing the south is compared to the rest of the nation. Man that place is screwed up.

Also I find it funny that people always get their panties in a bunch when they see "American" listed as an ethnicity but no one questions the fact that "Mexican" isn't listed as "Spanish"

The map is interesting but largely useless because of how it is constructed.

If you have one "ancestry" with 15% of the people in that county, that can easily be the biggest with the other ancestries having 14%, 13%, etc. It doesn't really say much.
