World Cup South Africa 2010

Pick the team you wish to represent in this Summer's World Cup Finals and win games to score goals!

Check the third post down in the thread to see how the knockout phase is progressing - updating as necessary now we're in the latter stages.
The Basics

32 entrants needed (premium please) initially allocated into 8 groups of 4.

Games will be 1 v 1, standard, sequential, no fog, escalating cards, auto placement, adjacent on home and away maps according to the country represented by each player.

Each match will consist of 4 1v1 games, with each win resulting in a goal, so you can win a match 4-0 or 3-1, you can draw 2-2 or you can lose a match 1-3 or 0-4!

A win earns you 3 points, a draw 1 point and a loss 0 points.

Enter by simply telling me which team you’d like to represent. Group matches will start rolling out in early June 2010, a few days earlier than the real-world tourney.

First Round

In the first round you will play 3 matches (one against each of the other 3 players in your group) of 4 games (2 games on your home map and 2 games on the opposition’s home map, representing the two halves of football).

So you will play 12 games in total in the 1st round.

The two players with the highest no of points in each group will progress. In the event of a tie, the deciding factor will be goal difference, followed by goals scored, followed by results between the tied teams. If there is still a tie, there will a ‘penalty shoot out’ between the tied players on the Doodle Earth map.

Round 2 – the last 16

Now we enter the knockout phase of the competition.

You will play 1 match of 4 games as per the first round. If there is a clear victor with a 4-0 or 3-1 win, that player progresses.

If the score is tied at 2-2, then extra time will be played, consisting of one further game on each player’s home map. If the score after extra time is 3-3, we go to penalties, which are decided by a single game on Doodle Earth.

Quarter Finals – the last 8

The rules are exactly as those for Round 2.

Semi Finals – the last 4

The rules are exactly as those for Round 2.

3rd place play-off

The rules are exactly as those for Round 2.

The Final

The rules are largely the same, except that for this grand occasion it will be 4 matches each way, so an 8-0 drubbing is just possible. Extra time will be 1 game each way if the final score is 4-4 and penalties, if required, will again be a single match on Doodle Earth.
Other info

Reserves will be accepted – games must be joined within 48 hours.

World Cup South Africa 2010
01/07 - Group H completed A draw between Chile and Spain was enough to see both sides through - earlier results had already confirmed the exit of Honduras and Switzerland.

30/06 - Group E completed Japan were 4-0 victors over Denmark, sealing a last 16 place ahead of Cameroon on goal difference alone. Holland has already qualified top of the group.

30/06 - Group F completed A 3-1 win for the Italians was not enough to rescue their tournament hopes, while New Zealand stormed to a 4-0 and the maximum 9 points from their group games, the all-whites opponents, Paraguay, go through in second place

28/06 - Group G completed Portugal progress after a 3-1 win over Brazil took them level on points with North Korea and Cote d'Ivoire. The African side have the better goal difference, but it took the result between Portugal and N. Korea to seperate the sides in the favour of the Portuguese. Both side had been level on both goal difference and goals scored.

25/06 - Group B completed - Nigeria outshone South Korea, winning 3-1 to top Group B, where they will take on France, but the Koreans also go through to the next round in second spot and have earned a match-up against Uruguay.

23/06 - Group D completed - Both Germany and Serbia nailed down their places in the knockout stages with 4-0 victories over Ghana and Australia respectively

23/06 - Group C completed - Clinical finishing by the Algerians has put them through to the last 16 as top of Group C. Slovenia will be happy with the result as they also progress following this game.

20/06 - Group A completed. 4-0 wins for both France and Uruguay ensure that both those teams progress. Mexico had been favourites going into the final games, they were sitting pretty on 6 points before kick off, but lose out on goal difference alone.
World Cup South Africa 2010

02/08 - They think it's all over. It is now. Japan (ga7) have beaten Algeria (chemefreak) in an astonishing final which saw the teams draw 4-4 at the end of 90 minutes, and 5-5 after extra time. It took penalities to seperate these sides, the Japanese keeper was the hero of the hour, with Japan listing the famous trophy for the first time in their history.

02/08 - The third-place play-off, a match no-one wants to be in, but which is usually an entertaining and well fought game, has been won by HighlanderAttack for Holland, beating zips5000 of Serbia 3-1.

28/07 - It's 4-4 at the end of the 90 minutes. I think it's fair to say that the whole continent of Africa, plus the nation of Japan is now holding it's collective breath as we head into extra time.

22/07 - Japan will play Algeria in the World Cup Final after a narrow win over Serbia. The Serbs will take on Holland in the 3rd-place play-off

17/07 - Holland are out. Algeria showed real staying power with a extra time 4-2 victory over the Dutch.

17/07 - Serbia have beaten France after an epic battle which went into extra time. The Serbs scored both extra time goals for a 4-2 win and a semi-final against Japan

14/07 - Algeria beat South Korea 4-0 up, gaining a semi-final place against Holland.

10/07 - Holland are doing well in real life and in this tourney. They have earned a semi-final fixture with either South Korea or Algeria following a 3-1 win over Cote d'Ivoire.

07/07 - Japan are the first team to progress to the semi finals, a 3-1 victory over Chile will see them line up against either France or Serbia.
07/07 - The remaining quarter finalist was confirmed last night as the Netherlands completed their 4-0 rout of Paraguay

06/07 - A long and dramatic match between Serbia and Slovenia saw them level at 2-2 after 90 minutes. Extra time could not seperate the two European sides and at 3-3, we went to penalties. Serbia edged the match from the spot kicks and will take on France.

06/07 - South Korea overcame Uruguay 3-1 and will fight with Algeria for their place in the next round

04/07 - Cote d'Ivoire have knocked Spain out of the competition with a 3-1 win and await either the Netherlands or Paraguay in the quarter finals.

01/07 - Chile gave Portugal a 4-0 battering and will face-off against Japan in the quarter finals. We've now filled half of the quarter final spots.

29/06 - Japan are now through to the last 8, seeing off New Zealand in a game which ended 3-1.

29/06 - France join Algeria in the quarter-finals after a walk over against Nigeria. The Nigerians spent a long time partying after qualification, and are yet to reappear.

24/06 - We have our first Quarter-Finalists. Algeria overcame Germany 3-1 in a fast-paced match and will face either Uruguay or the runner-up of Group B in the next round.
