when birds swoop down on their prey they fly with their wings tucked back for a quicker dive. So your bird must have missed, cause they only open their wings when they're starting to fly back up.

actually jak if you had ever seen a red-tail hawk dive. It opens up its wings at the last second and tents them around it's prey.
