those who join cc because they like a board game with similar rules will be perfectly at home in escalating games.

If I recall correctly, in Europe the board game was published with Flat rate rules... so not everyone who is familiar with the board game will be familiar with escalating...

Well I have been playing online for 12 years in europe and Ascending cards(Escalating cards) has always been part of the game.
Its a much prefered way of playing. Its normally quicker and takes some of the luck aspect out of the game.
I'll dig out my 1967 waddingtons version and see if its Flat rate later though.
My favourite map is Malta.Perfect for new players.

Thus the reason I don't play escalating.

Why not? They're fun.

It's always fun to try new things anyway ;)

I like escalating because it minimizes deadlocks. I much prefer a game to finish one way or the other rather than to have it drag on endlessly.

QFT. Escalating games are a fun way to screw noobs... erm... I mean, who wouldn't enjoy that smug sense of self-satisfaction when they see a cook wasting his armies trying to hold a +2 bonus area, while you're preparing to kill him for his cards... erm... I mean, escalating games are fun.

I like Doodle Earth for beginners, because you don't have that much to keep track of.

I like aor2 because it's 51% strategy and noobs don't normally win by luck :)

The USA Map---and the USA Map Pack (individual regions) are pretty good for starting. The USA map is standard play, and the Map Pack adds a couple of extra bonus ideas such as a capitals and road bonuses.

Tupence wrote:I'd stay away from NYC for now, it's a pretty big map with lots of bonuses. Classic Art, USA and Australia are all good and relatively straightforward, as is British Isles 2. Then maybe something like CCU if you fancy something a little different. Don't be tempted to try the huge maps like World 2.1, Waterloo and Supermax Prison Riot yet.

I'm of a slightly different mindset; stay away from smaller maps, go for medium to larger maps with lots of EASY bonuses that play similarly to Classic. Reason: in smaller maps, you can get overwhelmed before you get a chance to really understand the play.

I'd recommend World 2.1 over CCU, for example. 2.1 looks more confusing than it is, and that's only because a few of the regions aren't bonuses themselves but will add to the entire continent bonus.

I agree with Tuppence that you should stay away from Waterloo, Supermax, and add you should stay away from AoR, Draknor, Iraq... those require much more attention to detail and some knowledge of proper strategy, not "in general" but specific for those maps.

If you want to try a large crazy map, go for hive. It'll drive you bonkers, but it's not been around long enough for anyone to really have a set gameplan, its bonuses are easy even though there are a lot of small bonuses. Warning: it'll take a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time to end (plan weeks).

As a newbie to the site (although not to risk, I'm okay at it) I've found World 2.1 and classic to be pretty easy and fun. :)
