Football and soccer a both fun to watch. BUT i can play soccer with my friends, without holding back, and nobody will get hurt. If we played football and went all-out, somebody would end up in a hospitall. Football has more in common with gladiator battles then with modern sports. I'm not dissing it, but that's the truth.

If you feel that way about football, you shouldn't ever play rugby.

how does football relate 2 gladiator battles? Its just tackling, not like we r running around with weapons killing each other

Well, the two most iconic american sprots have a LOT of downtime, baseball and football in particular. Soccer is a lot mroe exciting, there are things constantly going on, its like a more agressive version of basketball imo (when was the last time someone playing basketball got slide-tackled?)

I don't know but if it's ever happened the guy was probably thrown out of the game. My three favorite sports: Baseball, Football, and Soccer.

The point is not in weapons. In both football and gladiator games competitors are willing to injure opponents in order to win. In moderns sports, rules are constantly changed in order to prevent that (of course if you saw Holland vs. Portugal WC match you know that there is a long way to go before players really become protected). In football it is perfectly normal for player to suffer a career-ending injury as a result of a "legal" tackle.
However, there is an area in wich football rules are MUCH better then soccer rules. I am talking about the right of the team coach to challenge ANY referee's dicision and to demand that playback of the incident be reviewed. That is very sensible precaution against bad or unfair referees spoiling the event by their mistakes (if you watched the TRAGICAL injustice being done to the Ivory Coast team in the Ivory Coast vs. Holland WC tie, you know how much damage a referee can do to the game).

That's not entirely accurate. People get hurt in Football but I don't go out of my way to hurt them.

I do like the review rule and think it should be added to most if not all games.

i agree that soccer flows better than baseball and american football but that doesn't mean that there is less downtime... most of a soccer match is downtime, to me. it's like hockey but much slower and less exciting, imo

American football.

I like it because it is fast moving (most of the time), exciting, strategic, team-oriented and punishing. I also like it because it can be very high scoring. I like soccer as well, but not nearly enough to watch a MLS game. Instead I watch the international competitions when I catch them like FIFA and CONCACAF. Even still, soccer to me has nothing on a good old gridiron match up.

Also, just a tiny bit of history facts for the naysayers.

Canada is the birthplace of American football in theory. McGill University of Montreal introduced it to the Americans by playing the game against Harvard. Yale later introduced the scrimmage and the downs system. It wasn't until the early 1900's that American colleges finally agreed to play the game as we Americans know it today.

I was not trying to say that all football players are set out to break as many bones as they can I was just pointing out that THE RULES of football are not designed to prevent injuries. There is for example the Face-masking penalty, but, as I said before, there are no rules against hurting opponent (in soccer, for example, referee can stop the play because of the "dangerous play", even if there has been no phisical contact between players. This rule is designed specifically to prevent injuries).

As I said before, i like to watch football and I like to play Madden. I just wanted to say that it is designed to be competitive and attractive, not to promote fair-play (wich is IMO the idea behind all modern sports). It doesn't mean the I like football less because of it (I like it less because I'm Croatian and football isn't in my blood like soccer is ). There are, in fact, lot of "gladiator" sports that I like more then their "fair-play" counterparts. For example I like PRIDE and K1, but am not interested in boxing.

If you could watch lets say the premiership on american Tv would it be more popular or is soccer not so popular because you havent the high level pro's that we do in europe in every game . . .

Doesn't allow fair play!! Both teams get to tackle what's so unfair about that?

HAHAHAHA!!! Silly foreigner, the reason we're not good at soccer is because their are few who are interested in it. Seriously, alot of the best soccer players in the US quit playing soccer and become a Feild goal kicker for american football before they reach college.

You arguments are beyond concise and represent the standard of validity in today's society...after all...we really can't be assed to play propper sports anyhoo. actually i was brought up playing soccer, i just stopped playing sports like soccer & basketball cuz i always fouled out, & picked up football cuz now wenever i injure sum1 i get a pat on the back
