Re: USA 6 Region Map Pack - BONUS POLL OPEN

Post by Serbia »

This is a GREAT idea! Hope this gets pushed through quickly!

I personally voted for only the State bonuses. I like simple maps with simple bonuses, for the most part. Second option for me would be State plus Capital bonus.

Also WM, if you need some guys to help test play the maps... ;)

So far the poll says yes to state capitals, no to interstate bonuses. I voted for option number three, but w/e. As long as there's not the overlapping interstate bonuses... ;)

Are these map intended for 1 vs 1 Tournaments coz they seem rather small?

They are all bigger than Doodle Earth. And with an 8 player game all players start with at least 3 terst. So no.

I voted for #1 because I think it looks sort of plain without it, but I could be open to any other option...

I Voted ALL... But add some variables. For Instance you don't get the Capital Bonus If you already control the STATE. That way it doesnt become to Clutered With BONUSES.

CORRECTION .. Just realized the capital bonus is for multiple caps. My vote still stands for th 1st choice - All oF Them

But did u consider making Each capital a +1 Auto deploy or something...And no bonus for multiple capitals ths would fit my suggestion above

The problem with that is that no territories start neutral. On the Great lakes region 13 territories would start with an auto deploy of +1. A person could possible start with all of them and really clean up.

I really like the idea you are creating but i have some concerns about the size of the maps your offering. A good dubs match would need at least 44 countries and you dont seem to have that many!!

Even trips and quad tournaments would play badly on this map! Am i missing something here?

I really don't see your point. Maybe I am missing something. Here are the territory counts as of now.

Territories
West (24)
Rockies (40)
S.West (32)
S.East (36)
Great Lakes (48)
New England (32)

Starting terts

-8 Player - All of them are divisible by 8 with no remained (except SE)
West (3)
Rockies (5)
S.West (4)
S.East (4) remainer 4
Great Lakes (6)
New England (4)

-6 player - All are divisible by 6 (with Rockies have 4 neutrals and SW and NE having 2)
West (4)
Rockies (6) remained 4
S.West (5) remained 2
S.East (6) remained 4
Great Lakes (8)
New England (5) remained 2

Does this make sense?

44 - is possibly one of the worst numbers of starting territories for a 4 player doubles. (Only beaten by 48)

This lets the people who go first get themselves upto 12 territories. - thus ensuring early bonuses.

How are things over here, WidowMakers? Anything in particular you needs some comments on from a tournament person?

nope. all the maps move together so since there's no image for two of the maps, this thread should get merged with the map ideas thread soon....

I agree with ed. I still need to do the other 2 maps and make a few tweaks to the cities on these three. Now that the poll is over and there is a clear winner, I will start on the other two accordingly.

Dang. I was going to enjoy these maps... but I really hate the interstate bonuses. I really hate the fact that these maps aren't much like the USA map, in any way but appearance. I feel like that one thing kills the spirit of the whole thing... and you have just lost an advocate. Hope to see you on your next project.

Fair enough - I'm glad the poll came out with the correct result too.

Is this set of maps going to get some progress? You had me all excited that this was going forward so fast. No worries, we all get busy at points, but let's see some hot fresh updates. :D

Well my wife just had a baby, work just picked back up, I have had many things to keep me from CC lately and now the Brazil revamp contest is open (hint hint) and i was working a lot on yeti_c's map, Poker Club. It has just got its GFX stamp so I don't anticipate much more work on my end for that.

But to answer your question, I have not forgotten these maps. I will complete them just be patient. Believe me, you are not the only person who wishes I had more time to work on more maps. I am glad there is enthusiasm for the set of maps. But they will probably be on a mini vacation for a couple of weeks. Just stay tuned.

Re: USA 6 Region Map Pack - Mini Vacation

Post by WidowMakers »

Hello Everyone.

As many of you may or may not know my wife and I had a baby a month ago. My intention was to get right back on this map pack but things are slower than anticipated. While I wanted to have all 6 maps drafted out before we started talking about gameplay, bonuses, names and other stuff, I see that that is just a waste of time. So...

I would like to have the first three maps (WEST, SOUTHWEST, ROCKIES) start discussion on everything EXCEPT graphics. Graphics will only be discussed once all of the maps are grafted and comparable. My intention was to have at least the SOUTHEAST map draft done today but I left my pencil sketch map at work and will not get it till Monday.

Use this form at the top of your post to keep track of which map you are discussing:(GAMEPLAY COMMENTS ONLY)
    -Map:WEST, SOUTHWEST, ROCKIES
    -Comment Area: A)City Names, B)Road connections (i.e. borders), C)Bonuses, D)Number of Terts, E) OTHER??
-Then copy the image (only if necessary to help explain the comment)

By doing this it will be easier for each person to follow discussion on each map

I will try my best to comment on each item and move the discussion along. Once a discussion has been reached, the first page will be updated with the direction for each map. Once enough changes are decided, I will update each map accordingly. And in the mean time, I will try my best to get the other 3 maps drafted and ready for GAMEPLAY talks.

Image

P.S. Thanks for your patience. I will try not to let these maps fall behind again. I can't promise anything, nut I will try my best. Looking forward to the discussion.

Freeways: as is except I-25: 5

Overall:

1. you have quite a few places that have one border. it's harder to give these places bonuses since they're so easy to hold. sometimes though it's a lot of work to just get a tiny bonus. if you give them +2 then other places that have 2 borders get +3 etc...

2. freeways should have the symbols with the number on the map itself to make it totally obvious which freeway is which (colourblind help too)

Hmmm - I think Oklahoma should be 2 -> It's the same as Arizona - and is close to 2 other 2 conts - so would be easy to expand into - and growing bonus - but with no extra borders... (And you then also get a capitals bonus)

Might even consider Louisiana as 1 - as it only has 1 border.

C.

PS - other 2 maps - I agree with Edbeard.
