It was a bat she had sex with, and then she ate it.

I hope you mean a rooster, or that would be a bit kinky.

To Mookie: I may have mis-spoken: "Stop the spread..." versus slow the contamination rate. The basic idea is still valid, however; the steps taken in the USA should IMPROVE the situation.

I do not see The Ram having any better ideas, at this point.

Y'know, I was just bemoaning to myself that we're all stuck in the house (5 people, small house) but then I thought, well, if the curlson and family weren't here, and mrs the curl had gone back to Africa as planned, I'd be avoiding contact and on my own, which would be far worse.

I'd imagine there'll be a vaccine available in around 3 month, that gives them just enough time to accomplish their goals. Until then, I myself will begrudgingly follow the advice (soon to be orders) given by the powers that be, to protect the old and vulnerable in society. Anything else at this point would be selfish.

British way of life is now completely on hold. Any type of socialising is going to be virtually impossible. I will not make a penny this financial year, in fact I may have to sell some things to stay afloat as certain charges will have to be paid. Lots of small businesses will go under, things are going to look and feel quite a bit different, once we come out the other side of this.

I seriously hope that you don't live high up. After a couple of weeks of being locked inside with you and your 'jokes' people will be jumping out of windows.

So long as they don't land within six feet of anyone we'll be fine.

That's a rational response. However, it didn't work. The disease circled the globe, created new hubs in almost every major country, and is now too widespread for any reasonable containment strategy to work. The quarantines are a failed strategy. They are also a very expensive and socially disruptive strategy.

I don't question the fact that it was right to attempt containment. It was 100% right to make the attempt. However, now that the strategy has demonstrably failed, I think it's time to ditch it. One of the things you see over and over again in success stories of all types, is that the managers were honest enough to face the fact when their strategy was failing, and without getting emotional about it, flipped to Plan B without looking back.

This is dangerous thinking. The lockdowns are there to flatten the curve and not overload health services. Our hospitals are on the brink of collapse and it is set to get worse with more and more medical staff falling ill due to lack of PPE. The economy is crippled but if you ease the lockdown it will mean thousands and thousands more will die.

Yeah, this is an old thread. My thinking has evolved quite a bit since then.

I don't think we can end the lockdowns, at this point. They would have been unnecessary if we had tested more aggressively and identified the carriers quickly. At this point that's no longer an option.

I think many of us had time to re-think our original positions on this matter. The question still remains as to when to end this time of quarantine (or "lock-down" or "stay at home" social distancing mitigation efforts).

Move to Brazil, the president will agree that god'll protect you if you pray hard enough.

Hong Kong and Singapore now both under lockdown.
