hay ive been one of those people who has at a high rank (2000 or more) and ive been around that score for a while and played lots of games with others of the same rank. in all of those games i have not seen a higher ranked player go for a lower ranked one just to save a few points.

Standard games can be brutal when played with all high ranked players. I noticed when I was low ranked I would have people suicide on me just because they knew they wouldn't win and I would take more points from them if I won.
It goes both ways though because when you're a high ranked player playing with low ranked players it usually ends up with somebody suiciding on you out of spite.
these are both big turn offs for standard play. Not to mention terminator games which being high ranked is like having a bullseye on your name. Nothing better than starting your turn and seeing that everyone before you has attacked you.
So basically it's not the rank that makes the deciding factor it's the type of people you're playing against. People obsessed with rank will prevent you from taking their points while people who care little about rank will try to win the game.
it's a gamble some people are willing to take.
