More post-punk than rock but it's certainly my favourite song in the 'rock' genre.

Your not confusing this with The Captain and Tennille - Love Will Keep Us Together, are you?

I don't think Captain and Tennille could ever be considered "post-punk", could they? <smile>

I'm the opposite. I don't even KNOW albums as a whole, but I have certain songs that I greatly enjoy.

Yesterday I was listening to music and it shuffled to "Jessica" by the ABB. That song is damn near perfect. No lyrics, it can mean whatever the hell you want it to mean. Nice length and solo sections. Great musicianship overall. Normally I like hard rock/metal over country style rock, but I make an exception for this song.

A good album can be so much better than the sum of its parts. I would use an analogy of a movie: The complete movie is the album; the trailer is the hit song.

It's a good analogy. Some movies have excellent trailers but the movie as a whole is disappointing. While some have mediocre trailers, but are outstanding movies when watched in their entirety.

A few notable albums:

John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band
George Harrison - All Things Must Pass
The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street
The Beatles - Abbey Road
Concrete Blonde - Bloodletting
The Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks

Some albums, I like to play in its entirety when I'm alone. The slower ones I'll often lay down the whole time. With the more energetic albums, I'll play air guitar and dance around like a teenager (with bad knees and a stiff back).

The issue at selecting only one best song is that the oldies have that "legendary” taste that makes people to decant the choice in that generation, having therefore an advantage that came with the years. The other issue is to acknowledge that everyone has his own perception and personal taste, and thus consider the best more closely with the inner liking.

But what the hell, there is other songs that has not been mentioned, as One of Metallica, The Decline of NOFX, Maybe tomorrow of Stereophonics, and some others that can be the best rock ever, but because are not that old, is hard to appreciate that fact

Maybe the best rock song of all times is ...Stairway to Heaven…

Yeah, I can see that. I think a lot of it comes down to my not really liking/disliking particular bands or types of music (though by and large, I don't care for rap...there are a very few songs I like). So because of that, I've never gravitated toward nor purchased albums.

I wish to add a couple

Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
Up To Here - The Tragically Hip
Who's Next - The Who
Beggar's Banquet - The Rolling Stones

and many more

PS - Nag, I was joking about the Capt Tenille thing but you said its a direct opposite/parody/antithesis? I have probably heard the song I am just unfamiliar with many bands and song titles.....getting old I guess

For heavy metal fans I suggest Arch Enemy - My Apocalypse. :D

I've not heard the album...but I've heard before that it is great...I just checked and my library has it on CD...I'm putting a Hold on it and will be giving it a listen over the next few weeks.

AC/DC has put out a lot of great albums...have they ever made a bad song?

I like Dirty Deed Done Dirt Cheap, High Voltage, Let There Be Rock...

Almost everyone loves the Back in Black album...it took me a while to get used to them without Bon Scott, but I'd have to put that up as a great album too.

AC/DC is pretty awesome, but I hate giving MTG any sense of positive emotion.

I can't ever pick a song, but Aerosmith in general (and Toys in the Attic in particular) deserve mention for influencing every pop/hard rock act since.

If you don't think that forming a garage band with your other 15 year old friends and screaming your fucking guts out to Nirvana- Lounge Act is the definition of awesome, then you're either too old, too young, or you suck.

Or if you think it was a bad idea to get up at the school talent show in ripped jeans, flannels, and longish dyed hair and play The Beatles- Looking Through You with fuzz pedals and lots of screaming, then you also suck.

Assuming that "Rock" is not just another word for "Pop", that it's stuff with a huge amount of energy in it, and that we're excluding stuff that's too close to Jazz or the Blues, etc etc blah blah blah, here's a few personal suggestions.

Best Stones rock - Paint it Black.
Best Beatles rock - Helter Skelter.
Best Who rock -Substitute.
Best Kinks rock - Dead End Street.

The Sweet- Ballroom Blitz.
The Stranglers - Walk on By
Thomas Dolby - too hard to choose.
The Papers - How many more for the third world war?
John Miles - Zaragon.
Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band - Canyons of your Mind.

I have two all-time favourite singles. One is the Eurythmics Thorn in My Side, I'm not sure if it qualifies as "rock". The other is The Only Ones best-known track - Another Girl, Another Planet. Which most certainly does.

I'll stop now, except to say to BK that in my opinion Grace Slick's finest vocal performance was in White Rabbit.(and yes, I'm a fan - I can bracket her Jefferson career with two vinyl rarities - before (Grace Slick and the Great Society) and after - (Manhole).

Don't Let Me Down is another Beatles song that is worthy of being played really heavy with fuzz, feedback and lots of screaming.

Which concert would you like to have attended with the band at their best?

I'll always regret not have been born 20 years earlier to attend a Bruce Springsteen concert on the 80s.

I see Jones mentioned Sweet above.

Best lyrics....AC/DC by Sweet

(Chinn/Chapman)
She got girls
Girls all over the world
She got men
Every now and then
But she can't make up her mind
On just how to fill her time
But the only way she can wind

Chorus
A.C. D.C.
She's got some other lover as well as me
A.C. D.C.
She's got some other women as well as me
She's got some other women as well as me

She's got phone
But they call her bump
She got sick
You wanna see her dingaling
Well let's be in it together
I'll guess she'll be in it forever
You've got to take it now and ever

Chorus

She got girls
Girls all over the world
She got men
Every now and then
But she can't make up her mind
On just how to fill her time
The only way she can unwind

Chorus

A.C. D.C.
She's got some other woman as well as me...

Classic. From the Sweet F.A. album.

Did you ever hear the live lyrics for If we don't go down on you, someone else will?
