Let's just say - from our point of view - there is no now. There could even be several alternative timelines... You know, a starting point in history, and then several choices how things could have developed from there...
It'd be so cool to make a map with parallel realities...
Yes, but this whole thing is an alternate reality. If you give the system too many degrees of freedom, it becomes uncontrollable. What will unify all of this?
By the way, if I didn't already say so, and I probably didn't, I would like official membership in the new user group too.

You will be added once the group is made. I sent in the e-ticket yesterday.

Personally I fail to see why this needs to be developed within a private usergroup - you'll get much more interest from keeping a project in the public eye

I wanted to do the groundwork for it in a usergroup for a few reasons-
- If it was public, it would be harder to get through the parts that don't have to do with any specific maps but are necessary to the project. I feel like people who are not familiar with what we would be trying to do would try throwing up ideas or maps which would not fit or would not be as together with everything else. If it was privet, and all the maps were developed out of a similar process and by the same group of people, they would all connect and flow from map to map better.
- The maps themselves will be public, just not the development of the world. Once the first map is ready and a list of later maps is created so that all can be connected, it will go through the foundry like anything else.
- I like the idea of a small group working together and helping each other out in order to make all the maps. If ideas for maps were hammered out in the regular foundry they would become more independent and more of just one person's map.
- I don't know how well it would work in the regular foundry, as all maps have to make sense with all other maps, and it might loose some of that, as people sort of suggest things that might not belong.
In general I think it would run a lot smoother in a usergroup.

captainwalrus wrote:So I have an idea for something big. Real big. I would like to assemble a team of various mapmakers, and a few other people, to completely design and construct a new fantasy world. Now I'm not talking about just one map here, I am proposing we create something which can be the basis for dozens of maps. We can get hundreds of maps from our real world, imagine the possibilities of a world designed with CC mapmaking in mind. People would have to be dedicated, really dedicated. A lot of rough maps would have to be made never to be used. A thousand years or more of history would have to be written (not every little bit, just essentials and highlights), famous stories created, people made up. At first it wouldn't have much of an applied point, at first we would just be building a base, building cultures, races, politics, anything that we have in our world. Then would come the first map. It would be a general, not 100% accurate overview of the planet, just like the original risk map. From there expansion could be rapid. Each continent would get its own map, so that is at least 5 maps right there, then major countries, which would be 10 -20 more, then war maps, region maps, mythological maps, historical maps, everything! We would have to take care to make sure there are no inconsistencies. No element of any map could contradict another or the whole thing would be messed up.
Right now it is sort of vague, but anyone interested? It is very ambitious, but it could be epic.
Note: to help with the building of the world, you don't need any experience in mapmaking.
Oh, and it would be a closed usergroup, because I really only want people who are serious about it.
countme in on the project

How long until the usergroup is made?

I believe the intention of the usergroup is to create the story and the history. All maps will be created in the Map Foundry. Right?

I submitted it Tuesday January 5th. It is now Thursday January 14th. Do you think I made a mistake and should try again?

I think jp said you had to re-send something in your Q & A thread

Groups are sent to me for approval. I have not seen it. KA said that he had pm'd you (might have been email) and you needed to reply back to him. He might have had a question or needed clarification on something.

I'm very interested in the world you'll create with this. Is there any way you could make the background info accessible? I realize you don't want extraneous and unfocused contribution, but I'd like to be able to see progress on world-making and the map would make more sense if you could access information about the world.

I belive information about the world will be released once it has been developed, along with the first map.

The usergroup is really, really closed, or can I assign for it. Seems insane, and at the same time I like to write stories. On a new map they would get even better. If I can`t, I need to say something:
The geological structure:
Try making maps of past, present and future on this land. It will be better for its history.
Remember that mountains are normaly, recently tectonic creations, in a way, they should only be included in strategical regions.
Don`t forget some islands.
Storyboard:
There should be an world war.
There should be religion.
There should be great invasions through the continents such as europe conquering america
Extras:
Tecnology could make a good WAR
Food too
Do NOT forget peninsuls.
Important people in the ancient mithology, such as Odyssey.
Questions:
There will be poles(north and south)?
This should be called new world or new earth?
Idea:
As it is a new world, there should be elements that we don`t know in the periodic table. This means, the vegetation and deserts, shall be made diferently.
