As evidenced how?

Earlier you said that it was a regulation to give people choice. Now these same regulations are not about choice, but about one side over the other?

All great visionaries - from Galileo to Pankhurst to Mao - started out as fringe thinkers.

Not all fringe thinkers end up as great visionaries.

Looks like we got ourselves a Mexican stand-off.

The next question is about food in general. What makes GMO food a worse market choice than other agricultural practices?

I would suggest that cereal subsidization and the forcing of cash crops onto farmers have ruined agriculture more than GMOs ever will.

Never mind the Soviets greatest accomplishment

Zambia, for example, refused any GM food aid from the U.S. during the 2002 drought. Other South African countries have likewise refused any unmilled products for fear of contamination. These are just some of the examples of the U.S. giving away GM food.

saxi wrote:GMOs are dangerous because they are designed to bring about a disharmonious economic system, which is dangerous. So saying GMOs are dangerous is 100% accurate. Russia stands tall with the 34 EU states who have banned and/or required warning labels on GMOs.

Shrilling on about this and joining the "hurr-durr frankenfood" crowd, you're simply ensuring that the corporations will continue to engage in this behavior. They don't give two shits whether you force some ban or labeling agenda. They'll still find ways to lobby legislators and bring their products to market, and people will still consume them.

Yes, forward-thinking of Zambia. One day Zambia would like to grow their own food and, when they do, they don't want to be bankrupted by patent infringement lawsuits from Monsanto due to the U.S. seed Trojan Horse. The U.S. has essentially given Zambia a choice: (a) starve to death, or, (b) become a food colony of the U.S. They're between a rock and a hard place - face starvation of this generation, or face eternal poverty for all future generations. They've taken a courageous stand.

How many international patent infringement lawsuits has Monsanto won?

From what I recall, enforcing US patent law against foreign producers is extremely difficult and usually not worth the cost.

It could also be the case that Zambia is pursuing a protectionist policy. Closing one's markets to prevent a possible (unlikely?) future patent infringement is pretty far-sighted and excessive on part of Zambia's government. Governments don't primarily use import quotas and tariffs to protect from future patent infringements; they do it to reduce competition which pleases domestic producers (and generally hurts domestic consumers with higher prices and/or lower quantities).

I don't know the answer to #1, in reference to #2, I've already addressed the TRIPS Agreement, the bio-pharma provisions of which kick-in in 2017, IIRC. Monsanto hasn't been buying presidents and senators the last two decades for house decor, they're buying them for TRIPS flexibility. U.S. greed-colonialism must be stopped by hook or by crook.

According to this document:
http://www.zda.org.zm/sites/default/files/Sector%20Profile%20-%20Agriculture.pdf

90% of what Zambia grows is from the Americas. It's really a shame that the Zambians of 200 years ago weren't as forward thinking as the Zambians of today.

Perhaps you should look at media sources not controlled directly by the Russian government,

Like media controlled directly by the British government, such as the BBC? Or another government-owned news service? Voice of America? Deutsche Welle? AFP? RCI?

edit - I just bing-dot-commed RCI and apparently Canada stopped funding the RCI due to budget constraints. I always thought that was funny anyway, why anyone who was planning on tuning-in to an English language foreign propaganda broadcaster would choose a service from a minor power. It was probably duplicating the VOA / BBC noise machine at 10% the volume.

Although glimpses of the violence were caught on the phones of several witnesses, the clearest footage of the assault was recorded by a reporter for Vice News, Robert King. Mr. King’s video showed the Russian separatists hurling bricks and fireworks at a small number of participants in the anti-war rally, before breaking through police lines to beat the unarmed demonstrators.

Or here, in the Washington Post-

KHARKIV, Ukraine — Not far from this city in eastern Ukraine, Russian tanks are conducting border maneuvers. Yet for the pro-Moscow activists who gather around the statue of Vladimir Lenin in the city’s main square, that is still not close enough.

Such sentiments pose a serious challenge to Ukraine’s new pro-Western government. The pro-Moscow forces in the industrialized east are staging increasingly violent clashes with those loyal to the Ukrainian government — leading Russia on Friday to threaten more starkly than ever that it reserves the right to “protect” ethnic Russians.

It is unsafe to be pro-Ukrainian in Crimea right now, as the region is controlled by Russian military and hired thugs.
