Texas A&M Takes #3 Kansas State to the Limit
Posted: Wed Jan 07, 2009 10:39 pm
by Lincecum
Game 20 Big12 — #3 Kansas State @ Texas A&M
Game 3975180In an epic Big 12 matchup, Kansas State packed up their luggers and sailed "down under" to play at Texas A&M. The first half saw the Wildcats take an early lead with smothering defense, preventing the Aggies from getting above the bare minimum on their possessions. K State looked poised to run away with the game by securing a bonus territory, but a perfectly-executed back door play by A&M in round 7 broke the bonus and brought the Aggies roaring back, giving them the momentum for what was certain to be a wild finish. The Wildcats seemed doomed to fall victim once again to the "Top 5 Curse" after being moved up to #3 in the latest polls, but Coach Lincecum decided to go with an impact substitution off of his bench to begin round 8 to give his worn-out starters a breather. The lineup change paid off, as a miracle shot went in to even up the score (according to official scorekeeper BOB) at the buzzer - we're going to Overtime!
With virtually all starters fouling out, neither team could maintain much momentum in OT as round after round ended again in a stalemate. Just when things would look up for one side, their luck would swing drastically the other way (as evidenced by K State's horrendous airball on a 6 vs. 1 fast break in round 15, coming away with absolutely nothing on that possession, followed by A&M's similar airball in round 18). By this point, the teams were beginning to wear each other out with moves at breakneck speed. Finally, after the Aggies' round 18 airball, the Wildcats were able to put some points on the board and got a big stop on the other end of the floor to secure the bonus. Despite one final last ditch effort by Texas A&M, Kansas State was able to win by the skin of their teeth in a 23-round marathon.
K-State Coach Lincecum was visibly exhausted at the post-game presser: "Holy shit! That's certainly one for the ages - I encourage anyone who didn't catch it live to go watch the highlights tonight. It's games like these that end up building character for both teams. We were lucky to be the team who came out on top at the end - those kids at A&M have nothing to be ashamed of, they gave it their all. And I don't care what Coach Denominator's record is - he is a superb coach

, and I know he'll be making a run in the upcoming conference tournament - I just hope it isn't against us!" Asked if he had any words for the ranking committee, Lincecum gave a terse "no comment - except for the fact that I fart in your general direction for trying to curse us again."

#3 Kansas State makes quick work of #12 Texas Tech

Game 21 Big12 — #12 Texas Tech @ #3 Kansas State
Game 3996221Following a marathon win away at Texas A&M, Kansas State returned home and secured a much-needed quick W vs. Texas Tech.
When asked how his team did it, Coach Lincecum replied, "it was easy - we secretly stuffed their pockets full of rocks and they were never able to get out of the reefs. By the time we got there, they were nearly dead so I rested our starters and let our scrubs finish them off."
Lincecum was then asked to speculate on the win's influence on his team's RPI. "Frankly, I don't think it matters that much. Sure, it's another W against a top 20 opponent, but when you've already got 7 of those, how much more does it really add? I mean, now we've got twice as many as anyone else in the tournament. So what? It's like Nigel Tufnel's amps going to 11...sure, it's one louder than 10, but you still need to be able to play the damn guitar."
EDIT: following Coach Lincecum's above remarks, the Kansas State Athletic Department issued a formal apology to UCLA, who has 5 W's vs. top 20 opponents according to the current standings. K State AD, Buster Hymen, stated, "We don't know how Coach Lincecum overlooked this fact, since UCLA is his alma mater, Coach Lardass76 is a close friend of his, and Lincecum owns an autographed copy of Coach John Wooden's book. We regret this mistake and F*ck $c."
EDIT: damn it, Virginia Tech has 5 too. Apparently I can't read. Time for more beer.

Coach Plash Ricrem addresses the media following a week where Vermont went 2-0 with conference road wins against both Dayton (in 9 rounds 3996338) and Xavier (in 8 rounds 3975295)
It was a good week. I thought we came out firing in both games (securing quick bonuses). Our team thrives on transition offense and we were able to execute well. I thought we also did a good job of utilizing the 2-3 zone (unlimited reinforcements) to force our opponents into tough shots. We've finally gotten back over the .500 mark (at 11-10) hopefully we can build on this down the stretch and pick up the 2 seed in the conference tourney. Our upcoming game against Rhode Island should be a good barometer as to how we match up with them come conference tourney time next month...
