That looks a bit odd IMO. What if you were to put the army circle in there, and put the istanbul icon where the army circle is now?

Yeah, army circle on the straits would make sense and look good I think.

..but placing the army circles in the straight will make the numbers harder to read - especially this new font that I find quite annoying

i think this works quite well. it's the equivalent of having joined the two sides of the straights. hopefully we can move on now. thanks kab.

Now this becomes a matter of preference not of necessity. The problem raised initially, that European and Asian parts of Istanbul looked like different provinces, had been addressed. Kab and I like the shield where it is. You'd rather have the army numer there. Even assuming there is no clarity issue with placing numbers there, the initial criticism has been dealt with. Can we please stop micro-managing this to death and leave the map designers some latitude? This is just not necessary any longer.

Rask, I understand your impatience, but this is just how the foundry process works. People are allowed to offer their criticism and feedback to any map. Nobody is out to sabotage your map, people just want the map to be as good as it can be. Don't worry, it will get there eventually. I still remember how frustrated I was when I was doing my nordic map in the final forge and some people kept insisting it looked blurry, and some even suggested I should have redone the whole land area... well, I eventually ended up redoing all the territory borders, and the map ended up better for it. Sometimes you just got to trust these guys that they know what they're talking about, even if your own intuition conflicts it.

Either way, swapping places of the army circle and the city icon is not a big job, it would probably take no more than 5 minutes, counting the time it takes to host the image... if it doesn't work, you can always change it back.

The icon connects the Istanbul tert. I like it much better than the dotted line connection.

I do think if you lower/center the icon a bit more it would have a better look to it.

The army circle is at the point Dardanelles connects. Looks perfectly fluid.

Great work!

It's not a matter of impatience, it's a matter of principle. The role of constructive criticism from the foundry is to adress actual problems, not to substitute the preferences of foundry members to those of the map designers. Mapmakers should be given the widest latitude possible and not be micromanaged. If real issues exist, they should be addressed. If advice given is a matter of preference, map makers should consider it, adopt it if they like the suggestion, disregard it if they don't. As an aside, Kab (who is a busy rl architect) has put in an unbelievable amount of time, effort and patience in this map and at this stage, unless some glaring issues come up, I see no need to give him any extra work to do. I do appreciate your helpful comments, but that does not mean I need to agree with all of them and adopt them.

Yeah, you gotta be patient. At least this map is getting a post around once a day. 13 Colonies used to sit around for nearly a week before someone suggested to change the font or scoot something over. Graphics is one of the toughest parts because so much can be adjusted, and as I said, 13 Colonies sat there for about 6 months in Graphics. In the end the map was far better for it. I think the lack of quick approval makes a mapmaker think hard about his map and what might improve it, kind of how I ended up doing the letter thing on 13 colonies instead of just having a map. It's all for the better, I think.

ok.. the 2 versions for Istanbul. I could go either way, or stay with the previous version - Numbers in one margin and the shield on the other.

I really think this map is ready to be played at this point.

Option 1

Option 2

Raskholnikov wrote:Alster, I realise that city names dont fly here, but your suggestions are a bit too Gothic for a Napoleonic era map.... As for Malmo, it was that or Swedish Pomerania, and for space reasons we went with 5 letters instead of 17.. lol At this point, my inclination is not to change them, but that's Kab's call. He's the one who has to put in the time and effort.

Well, "Svealand" and "Götaland" is actually the regions proper modern-time names. But if you wanna stick with city names, I'd change "Malmö" to "Lund" (Lund was at least an important southern city) or "Göteborg" / "Gothenburg" (which has pretty much always been an important city on the west coast.

i like option 2 also.

I am ok with changing Malmo to Lund, if Kab consents.

Finally, Kab, can we change Greece to Morea? That was the proper name of the Pelloponesian peninsula in the Ottoman Empire.

Otherwise, i also agree the map is ready to be played.

I'm just finishing a stay with my mom after she had some foot surgery, and I have to get back to work and home and catch up on things in both places, so I could use a summary of changes since my last version to speed my production of the next.
