Wheel of Time?

Has anybody read the Wheel of Time books by Robert Jordan? He gives a map in the opening page of each book and it would really work here. I'm not so great with images, so if someone wanted to try it, it would really rock.

You seem to have a copyright fetish, ttocs. Try to let maps get off the ground before whipping out the "C" word, yeah? If it gets enough support then I'm sure the time would be invested to get permission. All you're doing now is disheartening the two or three people who know/care about this map. Have a heart; it's only a baby.

A 'Wheel of Time' map was pursued earlier...but was abandoned.

Why have them spend months making revision after revision just to find out they can't put the map up on the site? For any copyrighted material, its best to get the permission first.

i got all of them books :-)

also copyright is something else then it being to prevent you to make a map about it.
as long as you dont use a trademark to trade something or use a picture fround in the book. e.g. you can make your own, even if it closely resembles one..

I would assume that Robert Jordan's maps are copyrighted and trademarked, which means that a site like this, which charges a membership fee for access to advanced features, walks into a very gray legal area by using the Wheel of Time content, opening themselves to lawsuits, especially if Mr. Jordan is already in talks with Hasbro to make a Wheel of Time RISK Edition, which is quite possible.

Plus, I'm pretty sure lack has said he won't put up these kinds of maps unless permission of the author/author's estate is received.

Did this happen with the lord of the rings map?

It all depends on how the map is done, and what exactly has been copyrighted. With the Middle Earth map, my understand is that they made the map by hand with inspiration drawn from the official maps. In other cases, like the Eragon map suggested, they just wanted to take the map from the book and draw borders and put armies on it. You can't do the latter.

Also, you need to check on copyrights/trademarks of names. If you were writing a review of a WoT book, you have free license to use names mentioned in the book because you are reviewing the book. However, making a new product utilizing those names, a product which is, in part, for sale as it generates revenue, can run you into legal snags.

Now, the liklihood of Robert Jordan suing Conquer Club would be pretty small... but if this was a Star Wars map, well, George Lucas has shown a willingness to sue everyone and everything when it comes to his property.

ofcourse they usually start with a sieze and desist order. and i would suggest to simply comply then.
untill then free reign on creative adaptions

by what,me worry?
Get the map started first. Worst comes to worse and we dont get permission, some minor variations to the map can be made to the appearence and the name.

That's the kind of map where you wish you could change your player name to fit the mythology... too cool.

I only wonder if this makes a good concept...actually it's just one big piece of land with some territories...I think it should be interesting to play...I'll try some things out...
