how do you start to build up a army??

You need to build the barracks first and create guys in there. You'll also need a smithy.

As you upgrade your village headquarters more buildings will be available to build just don't use up all your resources upgrading the headquarters because there are others that need to be upgraded if you want to win.

The stand-alone tactics don't really work in this game so it's always best to have a tribe, I can go ahead and post that you are interested in joining.

I sent messages to three of the aristocrats in my tribe including the founder squarehead, so that might speed everything up.
