Armand “Mondo” Duplantis breaks pole vault world record in gold-medal performance at Olympics

SAINT-DENIS, France (AP) — The pole vaulter they call “Mondo” really can put on a show

Duplantis, the Louisiana-born 24-year-old who competes for his mother’s native Sweden, cleared 6.25 meters (20 feet, 6 inches) to break the world record for the ninth time — but the first time on his sport’s grandest stage.

His next move was a sprint to the stands to hug his girlfriend and celebrate his record and second Olympic gold with all those friends and family wearing yellow and blue.

Some people have said David Crosby, some have said Neil Peart.

Either way, a rock-star level of cool!

The UK is so close to being able to beat France at their own Olympics. Here's hoping some more running medals over the next few days.

thats kind of meaningless without, say, a total number of athletes competing?

Like if USA had 100 peeps and got 50 medals (.5 per) vs Beerfartistan has 5 peeps and 5 medals (1 per)....

So a per capita medal winning stat?

You should do that!

I won't; you can.

Then someone will want a ranking based on GDP or average spending or some such. Some will THEN LIKELY say we NEED some such because of "FAIRNESS" or "Justice" or some other similar rationale.

To be fair, yes, the USA has one of the biggest teams there, and we have money to spend on many sports and facilities and training. Look at how many athletes come to US Colleges for an education and for training.

BTW: The USA has dominated the Olympic Medal Count well before 2012.

BTW2: I did SEE this in a quick search:
Hong Kong offers some of the biggest gold medal rewards: around $750,000 each. Here in the U.S., athletes get nearly $38,000 per gold medal, though less for silver or bronze.
and MORE:

footnote:
Unlike other countries, the United States does not provide any funding for its elite sports nor for the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee.[31][32]

You challenge me to do it, and when I refuse, you do it yourself, THEN somehow claim VICTORY? How is that a victory. I claim the Tom Sawyer here.

US Men's Basketball beat Serbia and now plays for the Gold Medal.
USA Basketball score: Americans mount frantic comeback vs. Serbia in Paris Olympics as Steph Curry stars

The Americans erased a 17-point deficit against Nikola Jokic and Serbia to reach the gold medal game

(...)
Team USA men's basketball is heading back to the gold medal game after a frantic 95-91 win against Serbia in the semifinals at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Thursday. The Americans, who entered as 15.5-point favorites, trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half. Team USA trailed by 13 entering the fourth quarter. But they outscored Serbia by 17 points in the final 10 minutes as Stephen Curry, Joel Embiid and Kevin Durant led the late push.

btw:
Curry dropped an Olympic career-high 36 points in the win while hitting nine 3-pointers, which is the most any player has hit in a single game throughout the entire Olympics.

Medal Update; the only Drama is (for me):

1) who wins the most Gold Medals? USA or China?

2) What other upset(s) will happen?

3) What other nation wins something notable (e.g., first medal, first gold, etc.)

The USA has the Total Medal count (nearly) DONE; USA now leads China in Gold by one.

Team Gold Silver Bronze Total
1United States
30 38 35 103
2China
29 25 19 73
3Australia
18 14 13 45
4France
14 19 21 54
5Great Britain
13 17 21 51

6South Korea
13 8 7 28
7Japan
13 7 13 33
8Netherlands
11 6 8 25
9Italy
10 11 9 30
10Germany
9 9 5 23
11Canada
6 5 10 21
12New Zealand
5 6 2 13
13Hungary
4 3 4 11
14Ireland
4 0 3 7
15Romania
3 4 1 8
16Ukraine
3 3 4 10
17Sweden
3 3 3 9
18Uzbekistan
3 0 2 5

You DID IT? or merely found it online somewhere? And how long did you have to find it?

And what does it PROVE? Not much. BUT, w/e floats ur boat. It does not float mine.

I find it ODD (and a bit interesting) that Breaking (or Break Dancing), a fad that was in the USA in the 1980s or so, is now an Olympic Sport. We had a young man in a strong competition for a medal, but did not follow what he did.

As I see it, Break Dance basically FADED out as a FAD shortly after it "broke" big in the USA and is now a mostly small "niche" activity.

So your CLAIM that you, KB, did it is FALSE, you did NOT DO IT; Mookie FOUND it. You did nothing, KB, except make FALSE CLAIMS. I apologize to Mookie, thinking KB posted the actual per capita Standings.

AND THAT, Duk, is what this dispute is about, what DID KB actually do? Did you only read the last post or did you read this entire PAGE?
