What do we know??
1. Shortest guy died from bullet
2. he shot himself.
3. They worked in the circus
Why did he shot himself?
What is the purpose of the stick?
How is the 2nd man involved?

Ok Bomber, so you said that this is at the circus, and these aren't fictional characters so this must be based on a true story...
This is the first time we find out that one guy is shorter...
You say the stick is important... could the guy that got shot been walking the high wire with his balance stick thing (not sure what they call it, I'm a fire eater not a tightrope walker) and when he was accidentally shot by the first man who was doing something else he landed in the "bed" the catch net thing?
Or am I waaay off.

Ah... ah soon as I saw circus I knew it!
The dead man was the worlds shortest man, travelling with the circus earning top dollar. The second man was the world's second smallest man, with a much smaller pay packet.
In a cunning scheme, the second man has been slowly shaving tiny bits from the bottom of the first man's walking stick, making him believe that each day he had grown slightly. When the first man noticed that he was getting taller, because his stick no longer fit him, he shot himself in despair at losing his #1 shortest man spot.

Someone already asked wheter the stick was a cane and the answer was "no".

close enough to spot on.
on the stick it matched his height and slowly became shorter than he, thus giving the illusion of growing. so it was a measuring stick not a cane

and invdr, I cocked up saying shortest there should of been dead :S, other than that the rest was copy paste

Okay....
So 9 one handed men are visited by a man in a black cape. The man shows them a box, they look inside and smile. The man in a black cape leaves. The next morning the 9 one handed men read about a murder where the corpse had a hand cut off. The morning after the man in the black cape is dead. Why?

Is this the one where there were 10 men in a lifeboat/plane crash/similar where they didnt have enough food to survive, so they took it in turns to cut one of their hands off for everyone to eat to stay alive, but on the morning of the 10th day they were rescued so the last man never had to cut his hand off. The other 9 told him he must still cut his hand off to be fair to the group, so he kills someone and cuts their hand off and shows it to them.
Then the next day the 9 find out about the deceit, and one of them kills the (still 2-handed) man who tried to con them?

Two children, who were all tangled up in their reckoning of the days of the week, paused on their way to school to straighten matters out. "When the day after tomorrow is yesterday," said Priscilla, "then 'today' will be as far from Sunday as that day was which was 'today' when the day before yesterday was tomorrow!"
On which day of the week did this puzzling prattle occur?
