Those same nutrients can be found in other food sources, to varying degrees of concentration.

Which is why vegetarianism continues, isn't it? ;) I'm still not convinced it's not the best for your body. But then I like meat.

I'm not speaking for Mets (or all vegetarians for that matter), but I'll think you'll find a large part of the 'meat-boycott' that vegetarians undertake is based on protesting the meat industry, and how meat is produced. Feed lots - Slaughterhouses - wrapped in plastic - displayed in supermarkets - If you are going to eat meat you should have to know where it came from, and how it was killed, and how the animal lived (to a certain extent)

Obviously there are plenty of posters that have demonstrated that they are often involved with the slaughter process - This is the correct way to consume flesh. However, many who live in cities will never see a farm, never see how the animal dies, and will often be to 'squeemish' to watch a video of a slaughtering. These people are hypocrites when they eat flesh, and that is my biggest problem with the meat industry.

I was a strict vegetarian (and for a while vegan) for over 7 years, mainly because I didn't think I could stomach watching a cow/sheep/pig etc been slaughtered, not because I didn't like the taste of meat. Lately I have consumed meat in cases such as going fishing with my dad & grandpa (and catching the fish myself) or 'rescuing' meat from waste. (The other day at a supermarket food court someone left an entire plate of lemon chicken practically untouched. I ate it because the cleaner would have thrown it in the bin if I hadn't eaten it)

Mets seems to be one of those who straight out doesn't like the taste of meat, and that's cool. I know lots of people who don't like various foods such as mushrooms, olives, chillis - etc. No one would really cop shit if they said they chose not to eat these foods. For some reason though, meat is so ingrained into most people's diets that when mentioning vegetarianism, alot of people react oddly and sometimes aggressively - It gets hard to constantly having to defend something as arbritary as diet.

No, I enjoyed the taste of some meat when I was still eating meat many years ago. What I don't like is the thought of eating an animal. I find it aesthetically objectionable (I won't say morally because it's really got nothing to do with morals in my mind).

That is perfectly OK, even admirable (that you do as you feel correct, that is) as long as, like you, vegetariens don't expect or insist others do also abstain from meat or declare it is morally inferior to eat meat. I think most people have met vegetariens who saw it more as a "cause" or "campaign". Worse, many base their ideas on utterly false information. (there is misinformation on both sides, of course!)

If there's one food group that humans aren't developed to eat, it's grains. We've only had those as a major part of our diet for some 10,000 years, or so, which is not enough time to have evolved the ability to digest them properly.

I meat more vegetables than meat, but that's for two main reasons:

1) I think vegetables taste better. I don't like things that taste salty or fatty, and meat usually fits one of those (which is probably why I like fish so much, it's neither of those things)
2) It's overall healthier, so why not?

Dairy in the human diet is really the most major staple that the human body is not really adapted for, in my opinion. That is, cow's milk is for baby cows, not for people. Sure people can drink it because by random chance they contain many of the same important nutrients, but there are also some in there that humans don't at all need in the levels they appear at in cow's milk.

I eat meat for two reasons:

- Meat tastes amazing. Nothing in the vegetarian menu compares to meat prepared and cooked well

- I can't bring myself to care enough about farm animal welfare to make a strong enough case not to eat it: Sure there is a case (I am against animal creulty), but hell I struggle to muster up sympathy for dumb people let alone even dumber non-people.

Point 1, fine, that's your opinion. Point 2 I'd argue isn't true, or at least not entirely. Vegetables aren't the epitome of healthy foods. Fruits and meats are also vital to the body, because they provide nutrients that other foods, like vegetables, don't. And besides, there are, in fact, good fats, and salt is also a necessity to the human diet (though in a very small quantity).

The key is balance and knowing where your food comes from as much as possible.. be it vegetable, fruit, grain, meat or other.

I just got a message of support for this statement, from a surprising person. ViperOverLord (a dear and close friend of mine) was just telling me, this morning, how he's glad I posted this bit of information. He says he would have posted it himself, but he was scared that it might alienate his former friends, who thought he was an avid science-denier. Those people would be surprised to know that he was actually a biology professor at a prominent university in San Francisco (which he tells me is an absolutely fabulous city).

Anyway, I'm rambling. The point is, I was glad to hear from this almost-forgotten friend, and I hope he works up the courage to post in this forum again, soon. I'm sure he'll be sick of everyone (but not me. I hear it takes a lot of courage to come out to your family) thinking he's a coward, soon enough. Until then, keep fighting the good fight, little buddy.

Well, I would say he turned Vegan about 6 months ago. When was he "off then"? Before Vegan or after?

So the rain forest goes so you can eat meat

This is true if you look to factory farming. However, it definitely does not have to be true. Ruminents became tied to humans because they can utilize grasses and such that we cannot eat.. so they were not taking food from humans, but were expanding our food source. Also, the fertilizer they provide is critical to natural agriculture.

He is talking about meat cows and not milk cows. There is a huge difference between the two and the amount feed per output of food. (side note)Best ratio of one to one food to fat though are catfish. Cow meat is very inefficient.

That inefficiency is only important if the crop being fed the cows and the land being used to grow the crops are suitable for other things. In traditional agriculture, even some large-scale agriculture, cows specifically graze on land not suitable for crops. Also, in small scale systems, there is plenty of plant waste that ruminants can eat, from human crops.

Plus, you ignore what happens with dairy cows. You only need a few bulls. So, the excess traditionaly go to meat.

Finally.. check out the ingredients for catfish food.

I consider it a rejected hypothesis. You can take it however you like. I know you love thinking poorly of me, so your interpretation makes sense, in that respect.

Overall, good work johnny.

Why do I need to know where my food comes from????

I think BJ's has really good steaks. They are certified USDA. Why should I care where the cow was born, where it went to school, and how it died.

I don't give a flying rats butt!

It tastes good. Especially on the grill after being marinated with soy sauce and garlic.

Oh and BTW... I don't know where the soy came from to make the sauce... nor do I know where the garlic came from.

Is it necessarily WHERE or what? If you mean whether or not, let's say cattle, is a grass-fed cow and isn't given extra antibiotics etc., then I think it's good to know. Another thing that is gaining more momentum is the use of artificial colors in food. I stumbled on this article: http://www.naturalnews.com/032512_artif ... _food.html the other day and I thought of this thread.

The "where" is tied to the what. Among other issues, knowing "where", enables you to better verify the "what". Both are important.
