Perhaps not, but he's right about A Song of Ice and Fire
The Lord of the Rings is quite simply a masterpiece. Not only in the sense of story, which is quite simple but brilliant. But the real beauty of LotR is in the writing and backstory. The simply brilliant writing style which Tolkien uses, all the words have a purpose and were put there for a reason. A simple line from Aragon like "Not idly do the leaves of Lorien fall" is clearly written in iambic pentameter and gives the scene a beautiful atmosphere. And the backstory is so indepth that it can explain any plotholes which might be claimed. Not every author is dedicated enough to come up with a complete language.
Don't get me wrong, A Song of Fire and Ice is good. And unlike WoT it might actually be able to combine all the story lines into a conherent end. But it is no Lord of the Rings.
This may not be the right place to argue about this, and its way OT. But I feel I must stand up for GRRM on this one.
Ok.. i'm going to say something that most people are thinking but are too scared to say......
Tolkien and LOTR is overrated.
There i've said it.
I'm sorry, but I read a book to be entertained, and I really had to push through LOTR. The Frodo and Sam passages are so damn boring... it was a real struggle to get through that. And endless passages of describing the scenery... please.
GRRM and Song of Ice and Fire is so damn amazing how it can tell so much of a story and be so thoroughly entertaining at the same time.
That takes real genius.
