yeti_c wrote:A way to get round this is...

1) Code so that the refresh tries to revert to previously selected options.
2) Have "please select" at the top... so if previously selected options no longer available - revert to that - therefore you will get illegal move error - instead of an incorrect deploy, attack, fortify.

The refresh already remembers your selections. The problem is when the refresh happens mid-selection, i.e. the dropdown is removed (to be replaced) while you have the menu open. In that case IE assumes you didn't click anything and Firefox assumes you clicked on whatever your curser was hovering on at the time. Either way, it happens so fast people think they have selected something when they haven't.

yeti_c wrote:That won't work - the refresh might make different options available (in Freestyle if someone's killed some armies etc)...

Maybe it can work... if you look at the map and see a new option should be available, you can still manually refresh to get it.

We all seem to agree that Auto Refresh should be off during your turn in sequential games. Is it possible to implement this? It would be useful for those who play speed sequential games.

Map autorefresh in freestyle games

Subject: Having the map refresh for all people viewing a game whenever any actions that affect the map take place.

Suggestion Idea: Have the map refresh after all attacks and fortifications in freestyle games.

Specifics: Each time a player hits one of the 'deploy', 'attack', 'auto-attack', or 'fortify' buttons the map refreshes for all people who have the page open.

Why it is needed: When playing a freestyle game is being played, most players are taking their turns at the same time. If a player tries to deploy armies on a territory that is weak and under threat of attack, under the current conditions, the player has no way of knowing that his territory has just been taken. The player would then have to redeploy the armies with the potential that this process would occur repeatedly. If the map were to reset every time any army sizes change this would give players more warning. Also, the player that ended the previous turn is at a disadvantage because (s)he needs to continually hit 'refresh map' and wait until people start their turns. With this change, once one player starts their turn the 'begin turn' button would show up.

that would get hectic on the server and the computer. Especially on a speed game. If 5 people do their turns at the same time, it would be near impossible for them to do something without their map refreshing every second.

Thats a good point. Are there any alternate ways to do this without overloading the server? Could it be instituted just for the case of ending a turn and/or starting a turn?

AUTO REFRESH IS Screwing up my games :(

I have recently started playing speed games and speed freestyle games, I have noticed that the auto refresh is a hinderence in these games. I will give a few examples:

1- when I try to deploy, or end a turn, or fortify, the auto refresh will kick in and stop my action, this causes me to have to fortify , drop or end and start my turn twice. I cannot count how many times this has cost me those precious few seconds that made me lose a card or an elimination.

2- I am in a deployment stage and hit the deployment button, auto refresh kicks in and makes me do it again, only to watch my men get distributed in the wrong amount to the wrong territory. In freestyle it can mean the difference of keeping a territory and dropping that cash on your land, or having someone kill you off . I have had many instances that I had to deploy twice only to have the game say it is an illegal deployment...ARRRGGG!!!

3-Trying to end turn at the last few seconds, (common tactic in freestyle) and I lose my card because auto refresh kicked in and the site did not receive my command to end turn, and now the timer is done for that round.

4- I will at times try and read the log during game play, in order to see peoples attack patterns, (there are many reasons to read the play log),
Auto refresh makes this very difficult and keeps dropping the text back every time a move is made. So in some games reading the text is near to impossible.

5- auto refresh will make my page stick at times and I do not realize that the page is stuck, until the little box appears saying that 'connection to the server has timed out.' THIS is very common and happens to many times a day to count.....IN a speed game or even worse a Freestyle game, this is very disabling to my game play.

6 - and finally at times the #s shown on the maps disappear for 10 - 20 seconds or they do not reflect the real time amount of men on the board. ex: I deploy 6 men on an already existing count of 3, auto deploy kicks in and shows me with still only 3 men, I panic thinking that some player killed me, only to have the men show up on the next auto refresh cycle,
In the worst of times the men will disappear altogether.

I cannot say I am a great player, and I admit I am still learning freestyle play....BUT in a speed game I should not be losing seconds to a feature I do not want...I had better load time b4 this became mandatory. As well I should not have to do things twice, or have men not show up on the board. This feature actually is a real disability to me.

I am suggesting an option of turning the auto refresh off or on.

Thank You,
sincerely; Richardgarr

what browser/ OS are you using?

I am using firefox,
I had no issues with page loads, or getting stuck in loops b4 the mandatory ajax and auto refresh came into effect...now it is a plague, and limits my ability to play effectively in freestyle and speed games. So in effect half the game options are of no use to me. :(

My understanding is that you have either a slow computer or slow connection, which makes the "loading" time is much longer, and you find yourself frustrated waiting for the "loading" phase of each request to complete. Would you say that is correct?

If so, then I'm afraid there is not much I can do on my end.

I use both a 2007 PC laptop and my desk top which is slightly older,( I have the superduper highspeed ,) this is an issue with both comps.
I know that you implemented ajax as mandatory, and this became an issue as soon as that change came into effect.
Sounds like I will have to live with it, and avoid freestyle games. :(

Auto refresh when a player has finished theyre turn

It would be nice to have an auto refresh of some kind, not just for speed games

either in the form of a toggle option, to auto refresh when a player completes turn or on a player action

this would refresh both the player status and the map / log / chat window (if they are not realtime already)

would make rt games go alot smoother i think

im fairly new here so sorry if this has been posted before

It is a great idea, and it would be very helpful. I dont know if its been suggested, but it probably has.

I imagine there are some difficulties in coding it though, even with my limited experience.

But to have it looked at, you need to fill out the form, and it might not be a bad idea to use the search button to look up the subject.

Suggestion - auto-refresh map option

Add an option for auto-map-refresh on non-speed games

I don't know the logistics of the server and/or how much bandwidth is used by auto-refreshing the map, but it could be a very useful feature in freestyle games... I know, I know "freestyle is lame" - but it does provide a different game play aspect and some people seem to love it.

I'd like to see an option on the map for auto-refresh, and maybe a setting (e.g. 30sec, 1min, 2min, etc...) I often leave my browser open on a game and beat on my F5 key every now and again to see if the next move has been made - and this would eliminate the need for me to do that and keep my F5 key from exploding.

Thanks!

Turn off Auto Refresh in Speed Games (or make option)

by 6_roller
Concise description:

Quite often, just as you are about to deploy your troops on for example Zulu Land, the auto refresh kicks in, puts the boxes back to default and you deploy your troops on Alpha land instead.

Specifics/Details:
    Turn off Auto Refresh.
You should not have to install a 3rd part plugin to get round it.
At worst, it should be an option that you can turn off.

How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
Stop people deploying or re-inforcing the wrong terrs in speed games.

When the game auto-refreshes for me... it doesn't change where I picked... this may be a bug on your end. Just FYI.

Other than that, I have no opinion on the matter. I'd never turn it off, but others might.

I have the same problem as roller, TFO, it's not just him. I support this.
